Champagne Louis Roederer

Hand in hand with nature

Champagne Louis Roederer was established in 1776 and remains under the ownership of the Rouzaud family to this day. The current CEO is Frédéric Rouzaud, 7th generation of the Roederer family, while Chef de Cave Jean-Baptiste Lécaillon was appointed in 1999 following a decade working in the cellar under Frédéric’s father, Jean-Claude Rouzaud.  With over 240 hectares of vineyards located exclusively in Grands and Premiers Crus villages, Champagne Louis Roederer is self-sufficient for approximately 70% of their non-vintage production and 100% of their vintage champagnes, a rare situation in Champagne.

Since 2000, the house has been conducting trials with organic and biodynamic viticulture. Today all the vineyards are farmed according to organic principles, with 50% of them certified organic and 50% of the them farmed biodynamically.  The remainder of the vineyards will complete their organic certification over the next two years. This makes Roederer the largest farmers of organics and biodynamics in the Champagne region.  The beating heart of Roederer is respect for nature, and thus sustainability, organic and biodynamic farming combined with the recognition of, research into and adaptation to climate change unequivocally improves the quality of the grapes and thus the champagne. In the words of Frédéric Rouzaud ‘We are not artists. At Maison Louis Roederer, the great artist is Nature and each year we are the interpreters of what she wants to give us.  Our job is to take part in this choreography between Man and Nature in order to reveal the great Champagne terrorist’.

A selection of wines from each vintage are set aside to be matured in large oak casks in Champagne Louis Roederer’s unique reserve cellar. This wine is aged over a number of years and is highly prized for contributing the mature complexity and consistent character which defines the Champagne Louis Roederer style.

The house makes a range of champagnes starting with the classic non-vintage Brut Premier blended from six different vintages from over 40 individual plots in a cuvée composed of 40% Pinot Noir, 40% Chardonnay and 20% Meunier. The champagne is made in a style that is elegant and refreshing yet with an impressive depth of flavour.

Carte Blanche Demi-Sec NV is the same blend as the Brut Premier with a slightly higher dosage, making it the ideal accompaniment to afternoon tea or dessert.

It is only in the best years that Champagne Louis Roederer makes its vintage expressions. The Brut Vintage is a blend of 70% Pinot Noir (from the Grand Cru villages of Verzenay and Verzy) and 30% Chardonnay from Chouilly, which is then aged for a minimum of four years. Thanks to the predominance of grapes grown in Verzenay, a Grand Cru village on the Montagne de Reims, the wine is considered to be an expression of the terroir on that dark and dramatic mountain in the middle of the otherwise flat plaine champenoise.

Champagne Louis Roederer also makes a Rosé Vintage using the saignée method. The Pinot Noir undergoes a cold maceration that can last five to eight days extracting all the flavour but no tannin and only a little colour.  It is then co-fermented with the Chardonnay must. The Rosé Vintage is a beautiful expression of the Vallée de la Marne where the Pinot Noir from an amphitheatre like vineyard in Cumières benefits from the additional warmth of the light reflected off the Marne river, giving the wine fuller, fruitier flavours.  This is blended with 40% Chardonnay from our coolest vineyards in Chouilly.

From the best Grand Cru vineyards in Avize in the Côte des Blancs Champagne Louis Roederer makes a Blanc de Blancs from Chardonnay, which is bottled at a lower pressure (four atmospheres rather than the usual six) which produces smaller bubbles and gives a delicious creamy richness to the champagne which perfectly balances its chalky minerality and vibrant acidity.

The ultimate Cuvée de Prestige, Champagne Louis Roederer’s Cristal was first created at the request of Tsar Alexander II of Russia in 1876, a renowned lover of exquisite craftsmanship, he approached Louis Roederer to make him an exclusive cuvee from their very finest grapes.  The iconic bottle design with a flat base and made from clear crystal was designed at his behest to allay his fears of bombs and poison. The distinctive wrapper is there to protect the wine from ultraviolet light and should not be removed until consumption. Cristal is produced in the very finest vintages as a true expression of champagnes unique chalky soils. The blend is usually 55% Pinot Noir and 45% Chardonnay from only the best rated Grand Cru sites of Champagne Louis Roederer’s vineyards. Cristal is released after a minimum six years ageing in the Reims cellars and is the benchmark for luxury champagnes with its intensity, purity and complexity as well as its fantastic ability to develop in the bottle. From the 2012 vintage Cristal has joined Cristal Rosé in its certification as biodynamically farmed.

In 2014, the House launched the first new product in 40 years – since the launch of Cristal Rosé in 1975; the Brut Nature 2006 in partnership with celebrated designer Philippe Starck. The wine is a vintage zero dosage champagne, using grapes from a single biodynamic Premier Cru village grown as a traditional field blend of the three noble varieties in Cumières in the Vallée de la Marne, giving the wine a unique sense of terroir.  The wines are co-harvested and co-fermented.  In 2019, the Brut Nature Rosé 2012 was launched along side its white counterpart.  It is also from the same biodynamic vineyard with some Pinot Noir harvested separately for the cold maceration of the saignée method rosé.

Louis Roederer are delighted to share their champagnes with fellow wine lovers.

Collection 245

Champagne, France

41% Chardonnay
35% Pinot noir
24% Meunier

Tasting note

A bouquet of yellow fruits (nectarine) and ripe, concentrated citrus (lemon) complemented by sweet notes of petals, pollen, sugared almonds and wheat. We find an impressively ripe, complex and intense fruit which elevates the pure and intense bouquet interwoven with smoky overtones.

The palate is velvety, unctuous, rich and juicy. The bubbles have an almost saline character to them and coat the palate with a broad and concentrated texture. The wine reveals an exceptional balance between structure and a crisp, powdery, saline chalky freshness. Smoky and slightly oaky notes linger on a deliciously well-honed finish.

A bouquet of white flowers (jasmine, orange blossom), lemon zest and wheat complemented by an impression of iodine freshness, sea spray, sea breeze and powdered chalk.  A few smoky notes and a reductive, calcareous quality, reminiscent of grilled almonds, emerge after aeration.

The palate is creamy and caressing, revealing softness and finesse; coated velvet-like textures that quickly give way to fresh, marine, powdery and concentrated sensations.  One has the impression of biting into a ripe, juicy fruit bursting with a lingering and mouth-watering zesty freshness.  The finish is smooth, saline and stretches out like a shaft of sunshine, luminous and drying yet never brittle.

Louis Roederer Collection 244

Champagne, France

41% Chardonnay
33% Pinot noir
26% Meunier

Tasting note

A deep, broad bouquet of ripe fruit (wild peaches, William pears) combined with citrus (lemons, blood oranges).  The iodised and smoky notes, associated with the autolysis and the aging in wood, add aromatic freshness. Then come notes of chalk and a hint of reduction, suggesting that the wine will be concentrated and powerful.

The entry to the palate is delicious showing a rich and robust texture.  We have a very juicy and concentrated sensation as if we were biting into a ripe fruit.  The substance is caressingly soft, coating the palate but is then immediately lightened by the delicate bubbles.  The length is created by a lovely backbone of chalky freshness. The wine is both delectably rich, with a slightly roasted character, and super fresh thanks to a salivating finish.  The smoky notes then take over to underpin a very flavoursome finish.

Collection 244 marks the return of the texture of the Meunier from the Marne and the Montagne, which adds a lovely richness to the well-structured and saline Pinot noir and Chardonnay grapes

Cristal Rosé 2014 — Champagne Louis Roederer

Cristal Rosé 2014

Champagne, France

55% Pinot noir
45% Chardonnay

Tasting note

A pure, precise and dazzling bouquet.  The intense Pinot noir aromas take us back to the harvest time with its pure, ripe and concentrated fruit: zesty red berries (red currants, wild raspberries, blackcurrants) and raspberry liqueur.  Then come sweet spice and smoky notes with a hint of reduction (smoky, spicy) from the Pinot noir with its notes of undergrowth.

Concentrated and broad on the palate, where the red fruit (strawberries, raspberries) is concentrated into a firm, dense texture that reveals itself in two stages that reflect the year’s extremes: initially the texture is silky and broad on entry (the final ripeness) and then followed by a firm and intense freshness (the cool summer).  We have a sensation of concentration, of a whirlwind of flavours that burst delicately and gradually like salt bubbles on the palate.  The saline, iodine impression combines with the smoky notes and acidity to create umami and an infinitely flavoursome finish.

Deep yellow hue with a lustrous sheen.

Ultra-fine, dynamic bubbles.

Intense, concentrated bouquet of yellow fruit (white peach, mirabelle plum) combined with a delicious concentrated toastiness in the form of roasted hazelnut and almond aromas. Perfect, seamless and complex marriage of the almond, wheat and sweet pollen notes from the
Chardonnay with the juicy red fruit of the Pinot noir.

Concentrated, energetic and vibrant on the palate, starting out as a silky, almost oily, caress, with soft flavours of candied citrus and iodised spices. Then the powdery texture becomes tauter and the pure, precise and chiselled freshness crescendos. The salivating finish is underpinned
by slightly oaky, sappy and saline notes that create a simultaneous sensation of delicacy and concentration!

Brut Vintage 2015

Champagne, France

70% Pinot Noir
30% Chardonnay

Tasting note

The intense Pinot noir bouquet includes notes of zesty red fruit (redcurrants) and juicy, sun-drenched yellow fruit (mirabelle plums, wild peaches).  After aeration, the nose evolves towards the more classic aromas of the Pinot noirs grown in ‘La Montagne’: dried fruit and smoky notes combined with a few zesty and spicy aromas (white pepper).

The palate is dynamic, concentrated and powerful. The texture is fleshy and vinous with a lovely acidity that incorporates the freshness and concentration of the juice with great ease.  The structure is energetic, well-honed, firm and almost classic.  The fruity aromas gradually give way to sweeter notes of chocolate (cocoa beans) and even delicate roasted notes.  The finish reveals concentrated roasted and stewed fruit underpinned by saline, mouth-watering flavours leaving a magnificent final sensation of lightness, generosity and elegance.

Tasting note

The summery bouquet shows exceptional intensity and freshness with its aromas of ripe, juicy stone fruit (wild peach) complemented by zesty red fruit (redcurrant) and citrus notes (blood orange). Upon aeration, the nose develops more jammy notes of Roussillon red apricot.

The palate is soft, juicy and concentrated on entry and then quickly shows a chalky, saline freshness that structures the wine and lends it a voluptuous yet delicate mouthfeel.  The juicy, ripe fruit (nectarine and wild peach) and citrus (lemon) give the wine a fresh, zesty character that is underpinned by a subtle hint of bitterness.  The soft, delicate bubbles coat the palate and impart a velvety texture.  The end palate is mouth-watering and ever so slightly salty with discreet tannins and a lovely subtle bitterness that complements the incredible dry chalkiness of the wine and lingers on the seemingly never-ending finish.

Brut Nature 2015

Champagne, France

46% Chardonnay
37% Pinot noir
17% Meunier

Tasting note

The bouquet is pure, elegant, vertical, rich and concentrated.  Nuances of ripe fruit combined with exceptional finesse: fine, delicate citrus peel (lemon and orange) and Madagascar vanilla, along with warmer notes of baked apple and Tarte Tatin that gradually give way to aromas of nougat.

The palate offers a marked and singular contrast: it is very expressionist thanks to the broad, juicy, almost sensual texture of the Cumières clay soils, in a sunny year, yet distinctly minimalist due to a fresh, pure, mineral and mouth-watering backbone associated with its zero dosage. Ripe citrus fruit combines with warm stone notes further accentuating the mouth-watering, umami sensation. The finish is light, energetic and ethereal.

Blanc de Blancs 2015

Chardonnay

Tasting note

The bouquet is precise and mineral with notes of ripe citrus fruit and white, almost vanilla like blossoms (pollen) and notes of freshly harvested wheat and almonds. The freshness of the bouquet comes through in the form of minty and iodised aromas (sea spray) which slowly evolve towards warmer notes of smoke, hot butter and toast.

The palate is creamy and soft yet concentrated on entry. The wine, underpinned by the delicate bubbles, unfolds majestically. It offers us the sensation of ripe, concentrated juice carried by an incredibly powdery texture with a distinctly saline finish.  Oaky and smoky notes continue to draw out the wine, giving it extra length and concentration, an indication of its exceptional cellar-aging potential. The finish is pure, refreshing and mouthwatering.

Collection 243 — Champagne Louis Roederer

Collection 243

AOC Champagne

42% Chardonnay
40% Pinot noir
18% Meunier

Tasting note

The bouquet is open and rich yet also wonderfully fresh.  It offers an explosion of ripe, delicate fruit with intense notes of mirabelle plum from the Pinot noir, complemented by sweet lemon meringue pie and delicate notes of jasmine from the Chardonnay. The nose opens up to reveal autolytic characters and evolves towards smoky, roasted notes and freshly baked pastries.

The palate is deep and dense with a big, well-structured backbone. The texture is simply mesmerising with its fleshy mouthfeel from the Pinot noir that coats the palate before giving way to an incredible saline freshness with a pleasant hint of bitterness. This wine combines the strength, intensity and power of the delectably ripe Pinot noirs which are balanced to perfection by the chalky freshness and density from the Chardonnay which forms the majority of the blend.

Collection has all its warmth and generosity thanks to the perfect ripeness of the fruit harvested in the 2018 vintage, yet it is the freshness, energy and complexity of the ‘Réserve Perpétuelle’ created in 2012, as well as the texture imparted by the oak ageing, that extend and elongate the wines’ body resulting in unrivalled finesse and persistence.
