Domaines Schlumberger Pinot Gris Grand Cru ‘Kessler’ 2010

Producer Information

Now run by the 6th and 7th generations, Domaines Schlumberger was founded in 1810 by Nicolas Schlumberger, who established vineyards on the renowned slopes above the town of Guebwiller.  These vineyard sites have a history of viticulture, having been planted since 207AD. Through successive generations the holding has grown to be one of France’s largest and finest domaines.

Vineyards

Domaines Schlumberger now own 130 hectares of vineyards, 70 of which are Grand Cru. The Kessler vineyard has pink sandstone soil and faces east, south-east, which protects it from north winds and cold air streams brought by the valley of Guebwiller. Yields are 35 hl/ha. Kessler produces structured and elegant wines.

Winemaking

The grapes are hand-picked and whole bunches are pressed. There is static settling of the lees. The wine is fermented in temperature controlled at cool temperatures to nurture the aromatic compounds in the grapes. After fermentation, the juice remains in stainless steel tanks on its lees for a further 8 months before bottling on 8th March 2011.

Vintage Information

“2010 is a vintage which taught us to never give up! When we had the most difficult weather conditions during spring and summer, and thought our vintage was looking horrific, a weather change the 15th September transformed the situation into gold. After 4 years we are confident to say that it will be a long lasting vintage, that will only get better in the future!”

Tasting Note

Pale yellow with reflections of white gold. Notes of exotic fruits such as mango and pineapple and stone fruit complemented by a touch of anise, providing freshness. Beautiful concentration on the palate with some additional herbal notes and white pepper on the long finish.

Food Pairing

Serve with white meats such as roast turkey, pork, chicken with tarragon or veal escalope.

Serving Suggestion

Serve at 12°C

Wine Spectator: 93 Points

“Hints of truffle and smoke herald this rich, mouthwatering white. The expressive palate is finely meshed and smoky, with flavours of baked nectarine, dried guava and verbena. Presents a sleek, citrusy finish. Drink now through 2030”
