Meerlust Cabernet Sauvignon 2012

Producer Information

Meerlust Estate has been the pride of the Myburgh family since 1756. Today, the dedication to quality winemaking continues under the guidance of 8th generation, Hannes Myburgh. Cellar Master, Chris Williams, who has worked on the estate since 1995 has been in charge of winemaking since 2004. The name Meerlust means “pleasure of the sea”, as the property is situated 5km from False Bay (and 15km south of Stellenbosch), with the cooling influence of the coast, allowing the grapes ripen slowly.

Vineyards

The grapes come from low-yielding, mature vines grown in decomposed granite mixed with clay. The vines are densely planted on gravelly, low vigour Vilafontes and Dundee soil which has approximately 15% clay to ensure water availability to the vines roots right through the growing season.

Winemaking

Partial de-stemming takes place before pressing. Fermentation occurs in small stainless steel vats with regular pumping over for gentle extraction. Partial un-innoculated fermentation takes place. Following malolatic fermentation, the wine was matured for 18 months in tight grained French Nevers oak barrels, 80% new, 20% second passage.

Vintage Information

The grapes were hand picked and selected in the coolness of the morning.

Tasting Note

Intense, vivid purple in colour with slight gradation at the rim. On the nose the wine shows intense cassis, plum and classic cedar cigar box notes with lifted dark fruit aromas. On the palate the wine is full bodied and impressively structured. Intense blackcurrant and plum fruit bolstered by refined tannins and fresh natural acidity. The palate is rich and dense with a wonderful lacy tannic structure.

Food Pairing

Roast meat, steaks and game.
