Tommasi ‘Rafael’ Valpolicella Classico Superiore 2014

Producer Information

Founded by Giacomo Tommasi in 1902, Tommasi has grown to be the largest family-owned vineyard estate in the Valpolicella Classica, owning 105 hectares and an additional 15 hectares in the Lugana DOC. Tommasi is located in Pedemonte in the heart of the historic ‘Classico’ region, from which the best quality wines are produced. The estate is owned and managed by the fourth generation of the Tommasi family, with six family members working together in harmony. Pierangelo manages the UK market, while winemaker, Giancarlo prefers to stay close the vineyards and winery.

Vineyards

The single vineyard Rafaèl, a hillside vineyard is six hectares in total. The soil consists of layers of fine sediments such as clay, limestone and resulting in a beautifully balanced wine. The vines are Guyot trained at a density of 6,500 vines per hectare.

Winemaking

The grapes are fermented at 25-28°C in stainless steel tanks for 8 days. After fermentation, the wine spends a further 15 months maturing in 65 hectolitre Slavonian oak barrels before bottling.

Tasting Note

Bright ruby red, with fresh red cherry perfumes. Flavours of sweet cherry and chocolate with a smooth and supple drinkability, make this wine an easy drinking delight.

Food Pairing

Serve with cured meats and cheese or with vegetable dishes. Also excellent with more meaty fish such as tuna.

Serving Suggestion
