Ligne de Crete Les Grandes Vignes is produced from Delas Freres’ highest-lying Syrah vines on the Hermitage hillside, in the Les Grandes Vignes lieu-dit. The parcel sits at around 325 metres altitude and forms a primarily south-facing amphitheatre of semicircular vine terraces. The soils have a primary geological rock base, with the thinnest soil layer of the appellation, allowing Syrah to root deeply into the Hermitage substrata. The altitude and moderate wind bring coolness during hot summers. Production is limited to 1,800 to 2,000 bottles in the best years.
Vinification
The grapes are harvested by hand in small 12kg crates, then chilled for 12 to 24 hours before vatting. After destemming, the fruit is transferred by gravity into truncated stainless steel vats. Fermentation and maceration last around three weeks under close temperature control, with gentle pumping over and cap punching used mainly during the early fermentation stage. After devatting, the wine is racked into barrels for malolactic fermentation and 20 months of ageing. Fine and extra-fine grain oak is selected, with new oak limited to 30-40%.
Tasting Note
Ligne de Cr?te Les Grandes Vignes shows deep colour and impressive aromatic depth. The nose combines spice, leather, blackberry, redcurrant, floral notes, liquorice and incense. The palate is rich, dense and broad, with flavours of blueberry, raspberry, violet and dark chocolate. Ripe, smooth and well-integrated tannins support a powerful yet harmonious structure. The finish is long, mineral and refined, showing exceptional balance, finesse and ageing potential.
Food Pairing
Pair with pigeon pie, beef tartare ravioli, roast duck with cranberries, woodcock, hare ? la Royale, herb-crusted rack of lamb, venison or truffle-led dishes.
