Seigneur de Maugiron Cote-Rotie is a 100% Syrah blend from grapes grown across the C?te Brune and C?te Blonde. The appellation covers Saint-Cyr-sur-le-Rhone, Ampuis and Tupin-et-Semons on the right bank of the Rhone. The Cote Brune is formed from extremely steep terraces of ferruginous mica schist and schist sand, while the Cote Blonde has more varied geology, with gneiss and granite towards the south. The climate is temperate continental, with hot, dry summers and regular rainfall in other seasons.
Vinification
The grapes are hand-picked plot by plot at full maturity. Fermentation takes place in traditional open-topped concrete tanks after two days of pre-fermentation cold maceration. Maceration continues at controlled temperatures of 28-30C, with daily cap pushing down and pumping over for approximately ten days. Total vatting can last up to 20 days. The wine is aged for 14 to 16 months in new or one-year-old oak casks, with regular topping up.
Tasting Note
Seigneur de Maugiron is deep crimson in colour. The nose is powerful yet subtle, showing blackcurrant, redcurrant, liquorice and smoky aromas, supported by light woody notes. The palate has a tightly knit tannic framework and a silky texture, combining fine concentration with great delicacy. Full-bodied and balanced, it finishes long and refined, with fruit, smoke, spice and structure held in harmony.
Food Pairing
Pair with fine meats, roast beef, game birds, truffles, spicy stews, venison, lamb or mushroom-based dishes. Open one to three hours before serving and decant older bottles.
