Francois de Tournon is a 100% Syrah from Saint-Joseph, sourced from the terroirs of Vion, Saint-Jean-de-Muzols, Mauves and Tournon. The appellation extends for around 50 kilometres along the right bank of the Rhone, across 23 communes in Ardeche and three in the Loire. Soils are based on light schist and gneiss over granite bedrock, with south and south-east exposures.
Vinification
The grapes are picked by hand, row by row, at optimum ripeness. Fermentation takes place in traditional open-topped concrete tanks after two days of cold maceration. It is conducted at controlled temperatures of 28-30C, with daily cap pushing down and pumping over for around ten days. Total vatting can last up to 20 days. The wine is matured for 10 to 14 months in one to three-year-old oak barrels, with part of the cuvee aged in vats to preserve fruit freshness.
Tasting Note
Fran?ois de Tournon is deep ruby red in colour. The nose is marked by delicate cassis and spice aromas. The palate is smooth and voluptuous, with a fine, silky tannic structure beneath the rounded texture. Medium to full-bodied, it combines fruit purity, spice and Saint-Joseph freshness. The finish is long, balanced and elegant, giving the wine clear potential for ageing.
Food Pairing
Pair with fine meats, spicy stews, grilled beef, game, roast lamb, charcuterie, mushroom dishes or a wide range of cheeses.
