Les Challeys Red Saint-Joseph is a 100% Syrah blend from vineyards between Mauves and Chavanay. The Saint-Joseph appellation stretches for around 50 kilometres along the right bank of the Rhone, covering communes in Ard?che and the Loire. Soils are light schist and gneiss over granite bedrock, with south and south-east exposures. The climate is moderately continental, with hot, dry summers and regular rainfall through the rest of the year.
Vinification
The grapes are hand-picked at optimum ripeness and fully destemmed. Fermentation takes place in open concrete tanks at controlled temperatures of 28-32C. After devatting and pressing, malolactic fermentation is carried out in tanks. Part of the wine is aged in barrels, bringing a subtle oak note to the final blend, while the remainder stays in tank to preserve fruit expression. The wines are racked regularly for natural stabilisation before final blending and bottling.
Tasting Note
Les Challeys Red is ruby red in colour. The nose is seductively fruity, with raspberry, strawberry and blackcurrant, supported by a delicate touch of wood. The palate has good volume, with fresh red and black fruit and grippy tannins that reflect the Saint-Joseph terroir. Medium-bodied and structured, it remains approachable and expressive. The finish is fresh, savoury and balanced, with fruit and tannin in good proportion.
Food Pairing
Pair with marinated or grilled beef, stews, mixed grills, game, roast pork, mushroom dishes, charcuterie or a wide range of cheeses.
