Haute Pierre Chateauneuf-du-Pape is produced from Grenache, around 90%, and approximately 10% Syrah. The appellation covers almost the entire Chateauneuf-du-Pape commune and parts of Bedarrides, Courthezon, Orange and Sorgues. The vineyards are planted on alluvial reddish clay and terraced slopes covered with large rounded quartz stones. These stones absorb daytime heat and release it at night. This is the driest area of the Cotes du Rhone, with the Mistral as the dominant wind and around 2,800 sunshine hours per year.
Vinification
After destemming and crushing, the grapes are placed in concrete vats for alcoholic fermentation, which lasts around ten days. This is followed by eight to ten days of maceration to complete extraction. After devatting and pressing, malolactic fermentation takes place in vats. The wine is drawn off under aeration to encourage natural stabilisation, then aged in 60-hectolitre oak tuns for 8 to 14 months, building structure while preserving the southern Rh?ne fruit profile.
Tasting Note
Haute Pierre is deep garnet red in colour. The nose is marked by strong spice aromas. The palate is rich and powerful, with a tightly knit tannic framework that brings structure and depth. Full-bodied and unctuous, it combines ripe fruit, spice and Grenache warmth with a more savoury Syrah dimension. The finish is long and intense, with liquorice-like flavours and firm, balanced persistence.
Food Pairing
Pair with Proven?al stews, stuffed meats, fine cuts of beef or lamb, slow-cooked shoulder, roast vegetables, game, rich sauces or Mediterranean herb-led dishes.
