Champagne Deutz Joins the MMD UK Portfolio

Maisons Marques et Domaines is delighted to welcome Champagne Deutz to the MMD UK portfolio from 1 July 2026, marking an important new chapter for both the House and MMD as we celebrate our 40th anniversary.

Founded in 1838 in Aÿ, Champagne Deutz is one of Champagne’s historic Grandes Marques, recognised for wines of precision, finesse and understated power. The range is now exclusively available in the UK through MMD, strengthening our Champagne offer for the UK wine trade across premium on-trade, independent retail, hotels, off-trade and specialist wine merchants.

About Champagne Deutz

Established in the heart of Aÿ, one of Champagne’s most celebrated villages, Deutz has spent nearly two centuries crafting wines that reflect the character of the region’s finest terroirs. The House is known for a style built on purity, elegance and balance, with a focus on finely judged texture, chalk-driven freshness and precise winemaking.

Champagne Deutz has maintained a close connection to its vineyards, long-standing grower partners and the careful transmission of savoir-faire. Its vineyard sources are centred around Aÿ, with grapes selected from leading sites across the Montagne de Reims, Côte des Blancs and Vallée de la Marne.

Sustainability is also central to the future of the House. Deutz achieved VDC and HVE3 certifications in 2015 and began the organic conversion of its estate-owned vineyards in 2023, reflecting a long-term commitment to responsible viticulture and the quality of fruit behind every bottle.

A natural fit for the MMD portfolio

The arrival of Champagne Deutz is especially meaningful as MMD celebrates 40 years in the UK wine trade. Established in 1986 to manage the sales, marketing and distribution of Champagne Louis Roederer in the UK, MMD has grown into one of the UK’s leading fine wine importers, representing a carefully selected portfolio of family-owned, estate-driven producers from around the world.

Deutz became part of the Roederer Collection in 1993, making its addition to the MMD UK portfolio a natural next step from both a distribution and brand perspective. It also reinforces MMD’s long-standing expertise in Champagne, adding further depth and choice for trade customers looking to build premium, quality-led sparkling wine lists.

For MMD, this is not simply a new agency addition. Champagne Deutz brings heritage, reputation and a clear stylistic identity, while complementing the wider Roederer Collection and our broader portfolio of fine wine producers.

For trade customers, it offers a compelling opportunity to work with a Champagne house that is historic, highly regarded and well placed for a wide range of premium listings.

Now exclusively available through MMD UK

From 1 July 2026, the Champagne Deutz range is available exclusively through MMD UK.

For restaurants, hotels and bars, Deutz offers strong potential for by-the-glass placements, prestige pouring opportunities and carefully built Champagne tiers across the wine list. For independent retailers and specialist merchants, the range brings the credibility of a historic estate with the quality and consistency required for premium Champagne customers.

Whether you are looking to strengthen your sparkling wine selection, refresh your Champagne offer, or explore a new listing opportunity with a house of real pedigree, Champagne Deutz is a valuable addition to the MMD UK portfolio.

Pio Cesare Barolo and Barbaresco 2022 Vintage Report: A precocious and resilient year

We are delighted to share the 2022 vintage report from Pio Cesare, highlighting the quality achieved in a challenging yet ultimately rewarding growing season.

2022 VINTAGE REPORT

A precocious and resilient year

Despite an advanced vegetative cycle compared to historical norms and challenging climatic conditions, the 2022 harvest has delivered excellent qualitative results. This is due not only to rigorous agronomic practices in our vineyards, but also to the resilience of the Langhe terroir and the remarkable adaptability of Nebbiolo.

Climatic Conditions

The most significant agronomic factor of the 2022 vintage was undoubtedly the limited water reserves in the soil, particularly during the early part of the season. Combined with elevated summer temperatures, this placed considerable stress on the vineyards.

Following approximately 150 mm of rainfall in November 2021, the winter was mild and dry, prompting an early vegetative awakening. Spring was unusually warm and dry until the end of May, when a significant weather system brought around 100 mm of rainfall.

Summer conditions were hot and humid, with June and July temperatures well above average, further accelerating vine physiology. Flowering occurred approximately 10 days earlier than usual.

August remained largely stable, with fine weather, milder temperatures, and only sporadic rainfall. September was once again sunny, with warm daytime temperatures and marked diurnal temperature variation, ideal conditions for Nebbiolo ripening.

Across the 2022 growing season, the most meaningful rainfall accumulation occurred during the summer months, with approximately 250 mm in the Barolo area and 350 mm in Barbaresco between May and September. While these rains provided essential relief, they often came in the form of intense thunderstorms.

To optimise water retention, our team undertook exceptional and proactive soil management between late May and early June. This included deep soil turnover and the incorporation of organic matter, allowing us to capture and retain as much rainfall as possible while maintaining soil aeration and structure.

Canopy management was equally critical. We chose to protect the grape clusters with leaf cover, reducing the risk of overheating and sunburn. Anti-hail nets were used to increase shading, and green harvesting was both advanced and intensified, reducing yields (in some warmer sites down to 50–55 quintals per hectare) to balance the vines under conditions of water stress and heat.

These interventions ensured vigorous vegetative development, which proved essential for optimal grape ripening. By harvest, the vineyards were in excellent health: leaves remained green even in the fruiting zone, and the grapes showed no signs of stress.

Nebbiolo

Budbreak for Nebbiolo began around mid-March, approximately 15 days earlier than in 2021, with flowering and veraison following suit in mid-May and mid-July respectively.

Despite this early start, harvest timing was less advanced than expected, with a total vegetative cycle of approximately 190 days.

There were notable climatic differences between Barolo and Barbaresco, with Barbaresco experiencing slightly cooler temperatures and more intense summer storms. However, these variations did not translate into significant analytical or sensory differences at harvest, aside from those attributable to individual vineyard characteristics.

Even in such a dry vintage, early and rigorous green harvesting proved decisive. Final thinning took place just weeks before harvest, deliberately reducing yields to ensure vine health and consistent quality regardless of climatic conditions.

Thanks to intensive vineyard work throughout the summer and meticulous sampling (visual, sensory, and analytical), harvest was approached with confidence.

The harvest itself was short and concentrated, with relatively close picking dates across different vineyards and without the dramatic yield losses initially feared.

In the Barbaresco area, Nebbiolo was harvested between 21 September and 4 October.
In Barolo, harvesting began on 25 September in the Ornato amphitheatre in Serralunga d’Alba, continuing across other estate vineyards and concluding on 5 October in La Morra.

Tasting Notes

Thanks to the precision work carried out both in the vineyard and winery, the 2022 Barolo and Barbaresco wines display excellent balance between fruit concentration and freshness, with firm tannins and solid structure.

Barbaresco shows more floral nuances, reflecting slightly higher water availability and soils with a different composition, while Barolo expresses more smoky and mineral notes, consistent with its more compact white marl soils and warmer summer conditions.

For our family, it is essential that each wine faithfully reflects the nuances of its terroir while respecting the intrinsic character of Nebbiolo. Where necessary, our winemaking approach is adapted to the specific conditions of each vintage.

In 2022, vinifications were conducted with a gentler and more delicate approach, using slightly shorter macerations and moderate temperatures to extract refined, elegant tannins.

Following approximately 24 months of ageing, primarily in large oak casks (French, Austrian, and Slavonian) with a small proportion in barriques, extended bottle ageing proved crucial in achieving wines that are harmonious, approachable in youth, yet capable of long ageing, in line with Nebbiolo’s inherent longevity.

Barolo Pio and Barbaresco Pio 2022

Our traditional approach for producing Barolo Pio and Barbaresco Pio—our flagship wines since 1881—relies on the pre-fermentation blending of Nebbiolo grapes sourced from different exposures, all classified as MGA (Menzioni Geografiche Aggiuntive), from our family-owned vineyards:

Barolo Pio:
Ornato, Serra, Briccolina, and Lirano (Serralunga d’Alba); Mosconi (Monforte d’Alba); Ravera (Novello); Roncaglie (La Morra); Gustava and Garretti (Grinzane Cavour)

Barbaresco Pio:
Bricco di Treiso, Bongiovanni, and San Stunet (Treiso); Rocche Massalupo (Alba – San Rocco Seno d’Elvio)

Maisons Marques et Domaines hosts its 2026 Annual Portfolio Tasting

On the 10th March, Maisons Marques et Domaines welcomed guests to its 2026 Annual Portfolio Tasting, a highlight of the company’s calendar and an event of particular significance this year, as the occasion coincides with major milestones for both MMD and its parent company, Champagne Louis Roederer.

In 2026, MMD UK celebrates its 40th anniversary, while Champagne Louis Roederer marks two historic achievements: the 150th anniversary of its prestige cuvée Cristal and the 250th anniversary of the company itself. Champagne Louis Roederer remains under family ownership and continues under the stewardship of seventh-generation custodian Frédéric Rouzaud.

The tasting brought together a full representation of MMD’s producers, each presenting a comprehensive selection of wines from their estates. In addition, every producer showcased an ‘Icon’ wine at their stand, often a vintage of particular significance, offering guests a deeper insight into their philosophy and approach to winemaking.

Two expert masterclasses formed a key part of the day’s programme. The morning session explored the diversity and ageing potential of Sauvignon Blanc. Peter Richards MW chaired a panel discussion with Michele Drusian, Sales and Marketing Director at Attems (Friuli); Brian Bicknell, Owner and Winemaker of Mahi (Marlborough); Nicole Carter, CEO of Merry Edwards (Russian River); Pascal Jolivet, Owner and Winemaker of his estate (Sancerre); and Federica Boffa, owner of Pio Cesare (Piedmont). The masterclass demonstrated an exceptional range of wines, highlighting the versatility and expressiveness of this celebrated variety.

In the afternoon, Mark Bingley MW led a tutored tasting focused on wines from across the MMD portfolio that have each achieved a perfect 100-point critic score, highlighting excellence across regions and styles. The wines presented included Roederer Estate L’Ermitage 2019, Cristal 2008, Domaine Faiveley Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru 2022, Château Pichon-Longueville Comtesse de Lalande 2022 and 2016, Luce Brunello di Montalcino 2010, Ornellaia 2013, Delas Frères Hermitage Les Bessards 2009, Diamond Creek Estate Volcanic Hill 2013, Marqués de Murrieta Castillo Ygay 2012, and the legendary Castillo Ygay Gran Reserva Especial Blanco 1986.

The event once again welcomed strong attendance from trade customers, both long-standing partners and new contacts, alongside members of the media. Guests were invited to reconnect with producers, discover new vintages, and uncover hidden gems within the portfolio, with the MMD team on hand throughout the day to provide guidance and support.

Maisons Marques et Domaines extends its thanks to all attendees for their continued support and participation and looks forward to working closely with partners throughout 2026, a year anticipated to be rich with opportunity.

Champagne Louis Roederer named ‘The Worlds Most Admired Champagne 2026’

For an unprecedented 7th year in a row, Champagne Louis Roederer has been crowned ‘The Worlds Most Admired Champagne Brand 2026’ by Drinks International. In the words of renowned champagne expert Giles Fallowfield “an astonishing achievement by team Roederer”.

Champagne Louis Roederer has been widely recognised, not just for the consistently excellent quality of their wines, but for the insights, research and innovation provided year on year by Chef de Cave Jean-Baptiste Lécaillon, “whoes voice is listened to across the region, [as he] puts the spotlight on some aspect of champagne that matters and everyone is, or should be, thinking about”.

The Most Admired Champagne Brands survey is conducted by a panel of independent industry experts.  They poll leading sommeliers, retail buyers, wholesalers, bar managers, Masters of Wine and specialist wine writers.  Each member is asked to select the five brands they admire most in descending order, considering the following criteria:

  • The quality and consistency of the brand’s champagne, paying particular attention to its flagship non-vintage expression, but also focusing on the entire range.
  • The strength of the branding and marketing.
  • The price-to-quality ratio across the range – does it justify its price point?
  • How much they respect and admire the champagne house.

Champagne Louis Roederer and Philippe Starck unveil Brut Nature 2018

A sunny and pared-down new edition of this champagne, Louis Roederer’s visionary response to climate change.

For nearly 20 years, Frédéric Rouzaud, CEO of the Louis Roederer Champagne House, Cellar
Master Jean-Baptiste Lécaillon, and designer Philippe Starck have worked together on a singular
creation: Brut Nature, a pure, zero-dosage champagne born from the black soils of Cumières.

The fifth cuvée in this one-of-a-kind champagne, a veritable “laboratory” for the future of the
Champagne region in the context of climate change, was unveiled yesterday at Révélations, the
International Biennial of Crafts and Creation, in the presence of its three creators. A sponsor of the
event since its inception, Champagne Louis Roederer is again partnering the Biennial as it returns
to its original venue, the Grand Palais in Paris.

FORGING THE FUTURE WITH THE WISDOM OF THE PAST

Brut Nature draws its extraordinary natural vibrations from the clay soils of Cumières. This sunlit, 10- hectare hillside vineyard on the banks of the Marne has always produced opulent grapes with an unmistakable fragrance, generous richness, and a beautiful contrast between salinity and intensity of the fruit.

This zero-dosage champagne is produced only in hot, dry years (2006, 2009, 2012, 2015, and 2018) when the ripening conditions are exceptional. These years allow the Louis Roederer team to explore the effects of weather patterns that will soon become the everyday norm in the Champagne region.

“Brut Nature is the showcase of our most innovative experiments of the last 20 years, a laboratory
that has also allowed us to rediscover certain traditional and sometimes forgotten skills, such as
knowing how to bring out the best in the original Champagne grape varieties or the practice of
complantation. Vintage after vintage, this champagne charts a path that reflects the transformations
reshaping both our region and our craft.” Jean-Baptiste Lécaillon, Cellar Master

TWO EXPRESSIONS OF THE SAME TERROIR

Brut Nature 2018 is born from a free-spirited vision, which is unafraid to explore and experiment in
the face of the challenges posed by climate change. Shaped by a sunny, continental vintage, it
immediately asserts its natural presence.

This new, sunny, pared-down opus is a powerful expression of the richness of the soil and the
preserved mineral tension.

The Brut Nature 2018 White boasts a seductive velvety density, saline freshness and brilliant
balance.
The Brut Nature 2018 Rosé shows an impressive juicy structure, lovely bright aromas and a
delicately spicy finish.

A LANGUAGE OF TRUST

Brut Nature reaffirms its unique, contemporary personality with ever greater clarity with each new
vintage -undoubtedly because it is rooted in a true human story that also unfolds with the seasons
and the years.

Since their first conversation in 2003, the relationship between Philippe Starck, Frédéric Rouzaud
and Jean-Baptiste Lécaillon has only grown stronger. Over the vintages, they have developed a
unique understanding, nurtured by honest dialogue, a shared vision and creative instinct. The wine
was created as a tangible and poetic response to this language of trust.

“With Philippe Starck, we have created an exacting and honest collaborative work of art, one that
invites you to see and taste the Champagne region differently. With its great clarity and depth, the
Brut Nature 2018 is one of its finest chapters.” Frédéric Rouzaud, CEO of the Louis Roederer
Champagne House

ELEGANT SIMPLICITY

Philippe Starck’s design choices for Brut Nature 2018 reflect the authenticity, clarity and depth of its
singular creation story.

“Brut Nature is so honest, so minimal, that I didn’t want to add anything to it. I wanted to do as little
as possible with it. Nothing but the truth and honesty of the wine.” Philippe Starck

Taking simplicity and authenticity to new heights, the creator has designed a bottle without a label,
with just “a few words etched on the glass of the bottle, purely descriptive, like a cellar note” and a
shortened capsule. This deliberately minimal visual language expresses the truth of the terroir and
the humility of the craft.

Each champagne is presented in its own gift box bathed in earthy tones: a warm beige for Brut
Nature White and a beige-pink terracotta for Brut Nature Rosé. These soft, natural shades are
beautifully elevated by the addition of a shimmering silver. Opening the box reveals the bottle set in
an elegant yet minimalist presentation, free of superfluous detail – a celebration of the essential,
reflecting the harmony between man, nature and wine

Louis Roederer named the “Most Admired Champagne Brand” for the sixth consecutive year

For the first time in the history of this globally respected annual ranking by Drinks International magazine, which honours the most respected Champagne Houses, Louis Roederer has been named “Most Admired Champagne Brand” for the sixth consecutive year.

This prestigious distinction, awarded by an international jury of leading wine experts, including sommeliers, retailers, importers, Masters of Wine, journalists and wine writers, honours Louis Roederer’s consistency and excellence, its dedication to sustainable viticulture, and its unique savoir-faire passed down through generations.

“A rare achievement that reflects a continuous quest for excellence”

For over a decade, the Most Admired Champagne Brands ranking has recognised the Champagne Houses that embody consistency, innovation and respect for terroir. Only a handful of Champagne Houses have achieved the distinction of holding the top spot for multiple consecutive years.
According to wine journalist, Giles Fallowfield, who oversees the awards, “Getting to the top of the pile in the Most Admired Champagne Brands survey is quite an achievement. Staying there for six consecutive years is another level of challenge, requiring constant vigilance, unwavering investment and a real capacity for innovation.”

Commenting on the accolade, Frédéric Rouzaud, CEO of Louis Roederer, said: “To receive such a prestigious award once again is a fabulous recognition of the work of our entire team. It honours our unwavering commitment to preserving the soul of our Champagne House, while constantly pushing the boundaries, reinterpreting our terroir and refining our expertise to create Grands Vins de Champagne, wines of emotion that offer a singular taste experience. More than ever, we remain true to our vision: sustainable winegrowing, respectful of the environment and dedicated to the pursuit of taste.”

This commitment is particularly reflected in the Champagne House’s grandes cuvées, including Cristal Rosé, which has just celebrated its 50th anniversary. Created in 1974 at the instigation of Jean-Claude Rouzaud, this exceptional cuvée, based on a careful selection of the finest Champagne terroirs, has played an important role in the history of Louis Roederer.

In its article on the 2025 ranking, Drinks International highlights this milestone anniversary and the unforgettable tasting event held to mark it. This event, which included a vertical tasting of the finest Cristal Rosé vintages and celebrated the exceptional longevity of this iconic cuvée, was held at the prestigious La Tour d’Argent in Paris and top restaurants in the world’s major capital cities.

Pio Cesare Barolo and Barbaresco 2021 Vintage Report: A seamless blend of tradition and modernity.

We are delighted to share the 2021 vintage report and ratings from famed Barolo and Barbaresco producer Pio Cesare. The Barolos and Barbarescos 2021 will be released in the UK at the beginning of May 2025. Please get in touch with your sales manager or with Valeria Maffeis on valeria.maffeis@mmdltd.co.uk to find out about our pre-release offer.

2021 VINTAGE REPORT

The 2021 vintage was marked by a later harvest, following a long and cold winter with abundant snowfall and rainfall, which provided essential water reserves for the growing season. A cooler and drier spring delayed the vegetative cycle, reducing the impact of an April frost that occurred at the beginning of flowering.

Frequent rainfall in early summer, without hail, ensured moderate temperatures and steady vine growth, fostering optimal conditions for vineyard management. From mid-July, temperatures rose, peaking at 38°C in August but only for short periods, allowing for an early veraison and balanced ripening. Careful soil management, including compost application and green manure practices, preserved soil health and water retention, ensuring vines thrived without stress. A significant temperature drop in September, followed by a dry and sunny October with excellent diurnal shifts, allowed for a perfectly timed harvest, particularly for Barbera and Nebbiolo, which were picked later than in 2020.

Nebbiolo

Nebbiolo’s bud break occurred in late March, about 15 days later than the previous year. Despite this delay, the growing season was consistent and stress-free due to stable temperatures, leading to excellent fruit quality and balanced yields.

During August’s dry conditions, minimal and selective canopy management was employed to protect grapes from sun exposure, preventing bruising and enhancing fruit integrity. In particularly warm sites, hail nets were repurposed to create additional shade and lower temperatures within the grape clusters. Rigorous green harvesting, tailored to each vineyard plot, helped control yields and enhance concentration and structure.

Intensive ripening analysis ensured the precise timing of harvest, carried out plot-by-plot. The Nebbiolo harvest for Barbaresco was completed between October 7th and 10th, while in Barolo, picking began on October 11th with the Ornato vineyard in Serralunga d’Alba, progressing through various sites and concluding at the Mosconi vineyard, a traditionally later-ripening site.

Tasting Notes

Despite several challenges in 2021, the vintage delivered outstanding quality, with healthy grapes exhibiting great structure, vibrant tannins, and a perfect balance of acidity and sugar concentration.

Precise vineyard management, including the selection of drought-resistant rootstocks and the use of clones with enhanced leaf surface area, ensured excellent polyphenol and anthocyanin accumulation. In the cellar, slow and gentle macerations extracted softer tannins, while careful oak use preserved Nebbiolo’s purity. The result is an exceptional vintage that showcases a perfect harmony of power, complexity, elegance, and finesse—hallmarks of our terroir and stylistic refinement honed over years of experience adapting to climate change.
