Domaine des Grands Chemins is a 100% Syrah from Delas Freres’ own estate within Crozes-Hermitage. The grapes come exclusively from plots on the Chassis terraces, formed at the junction of the Isere and Rhone rivers. Crozes-Hermitage is the largest Northern Rh?ne appellation, with northern granitic slopes continuing from Hermitage and southern alluvial soils from glacial and river beds, including rolled stones and Rhone silt. The hills are south-facing and influenced by the Mistral.
Vinification
The grapes are hand-picked plot by plot at maximum ripeness. Fermentation takes place traditionally in open concrete tanks after a cold soak. Daily cap punching and pumping over support extraction, with maceration lasting 10 to 12 days. Maturation is carried out over 14 months, partly in tanks and partly in small Burgundian barrels that have held one or two previous wines. Regular racking introduces the oxygen required to soften tannins and integrate the wine.
Tasting Note
Domaine des Grands Chemins is deep in garnet with purple hue. The nose shows crushed black fruit, including dark cherry, blackberry and blackcurrant, evolving towards smoky and liquorice notes typical of the Chassis area. Menthol and eucalyptus appear over a mineral background. The palate is fresh, lively and serious, with intense, pulpy tannins and an almost silky texture. The finish is complex, generous and persistent, with strong ageing potential.
Food Pairing
Pair with red meat, feathered game, lamb in pastry, roast beef, venison, mushroom dishes, grilled lamb chops or rich meat sauces.
