Les Bessards is a single-vineyard Hermitage produced from 100% Syrah grown in the heart of the Hermitage slopes. The grapes come exclusively from the oldest plot within the renowned Les Bessards sector. Hermitage soils combine granite, alluvial quaternary delta deposits and Pliocene marl, with individual lieux-dits including Bessards, Greffieux, Meal, Roucoule and Beaumes. Protected from northern winds, the south-facing slopes are well exposed to the sun. Produced only in the best years, Les Bessards is limited to around 6,000 bottles.
Vinification
The grapes are harvested entirely by hand at optimum ripeness. Fermentation takes place in traditional open-topped concrete tanks after two days of cool pre-fermentation skin contact. Fermentation continues at controlled temperatures of 28-30C. Daily cap punching and pumping over are carried out for around ten days, with total maceration lasting up to 20 days. Maturation lasts 12 to 14 months in new oak barrels or barrels that have held one previous wine, with regular racking to support tannin development.
Tasting Note
Deep rugby in colour, with considerable depth. The nose shows great class, with soft aromas of blackberry and violet. The palate is concentrated and structured, with dense fruit, rich tannins and a powerful Hermitage profile. Full-bodied and balanced, it combines intensity with precision and mineral depth. The finish is long, structured and persistent, giving the wine excellent capacity for extended ageing.
Food Pairing
Pair with rare or medium-cooked red meat, game, marinated meats, spicy stews, roast lamb, venison, braised beef or rich mushroom dishes. Decant after cellaring.
