Pio Cesare
Pio Cesare is a historic Piemonte wine producer founded in 1881 in the centre of Alba, in the Langhe. Now led by the fifth generation of the family, Federica Boffa Pio and Cesare Benvenuto, the estate is known for Barolo, Barbaresco, Barbera d’Alba, Langhe Nebbiolo, Gavi, Moscato d’Asti and a growing range of single-vineyard wines. Pio Cesare offers one of the region’s most established and recognisable names.

Pio Cesare Barolo del Comune di Serralunga d?Alba 2017 is made from 100% Nebbiolo sourced from four family-owned vineyards in Serralunga d?Alba: Ornato, La Briccolina, La Serra and Lirano. Produced in very small quantities to mark Pio Cesare?s 140th anniversary, the wine pays tribute to Serralunga?s soils, terroir and historic importance within the family?s Barolo production. Serralunga was the first commune in the Barolo region where Pio Cesare began acquiring vineyards in the 1970s, starting with the Ornato estate.
Vinification
Nebbiolo grapes from the four Serralunga vineyards are blended before fermentation in stainless steel tanks. The wine undergoes long skin-contact maceration for 30 days at high temperatures, supporting structure, depth and extraction. Ageing takes place for around 30 months in large French and Slavonian oak botti, with a small proportion also aged in barriques. The wine was produced exclusively for Pio Cesare?s 140th anniversary, with only 1,881 bottles made, alongside a very limited number of magnums.
Tasting Note
This limited-production Barolo reflects the classic character of Serralunga d?Alba, with emphasis on complexity, structure and longevity. The palate is expected to show firm Nebbiolo architecture, depth and a long, age-worthy profile, shaped by extended maceration and long ageing in large oak botti. Structured and persistent, it captures the more powerful, authentic and long-lived expression of Barolo that Serralunga has historically contributed to the Pio Cesare style.
