Castiglion del Bosco
Castiglion del Bosco is a historic Brunello di Montalcino estate in Tuscany, Italy, located in the Val d’Orcia near Montalcino and known for Sangiovese Grosso, Rosso di Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino and Brunello di Montalcino Riserva. One of the founding members of the Consorzio del Vino Brunello di Montalcino in 1967, the estate combines significant vineyard scale, organic cultivation and a refined interpretation of Sangiovese. For the UK wine trade, Castiglion del Bosco offers a complete Montalcino range, from accessible Rosso di Montalcino to age-worthy Brunello and single-vineyard fine wine.

Campo del Drago 2020 is produced from the highest and rockiest plot of the Capanna vineyard, one of Castiglion del Bosco’s oldest parcels. The single vineyard covers 1.5 hectares and is planted to Sangiovese, with an east exposure at 430 metres altitude. The vines were planted in 1988, trained by Guyot and planted at 5,600 plants per hectare, with yields of 50q/ha. The soil is pure marl schist, contributing structure, mineral definition and ageing potential to this Brunello di Montalcino.
Vinification
Campo del Drago 2020 was matured for 24 months in French oak barrels, followed by ageing in unglazed cement conical vats. This combination supports aromatic complexity, tannin integration and mineral precision while preserving the wine?s vineyard identity. The extended maturation allows the structure of the high-altitude, rocky Sangiovese parcel to develop depth and refinement.
2021
The 2020 vintage was marked by a dry winter and a cool, rainy May, providing ideal conditions for early vine growth. Summer was hot and dry, with 64 consecutive days without rain, placing the vines under significant stress. Rainfall in late August allowed ripening to continue, although high temperatures and limited day-night variation accelerated maturation. The grapes were harvested manually from 16 September, producing a structured and concentrated Brunello with freshness and ageing capacity.
Tasting Note
The nose shows a refined bouquet of tobacco, coriander and fresh citrus, with a bright lime note adding lift. The palate is complex and vibrant, with pronounced acidity, depth and structure. Medium to full-bodied, it combines savoury spice, citrus freshness and firm mineral definition. The texture is composed and age-worthy, with a long, precise finish that highlights the wine?s energy, complexity and single-vineyard character.
Food Pairing
Pair with venison, wild boar stew, beef tenderloin with truffle, porcini mushrooms, black cabbage salad, aged Pecorino with chestnut honey, aged Parmesan or game dishes.
