Ramos Pinto
Ramos Pinto was founded in 1880 by brothers Adriano and Antonio, bringing a new era of quality wine production to the Douro. Ramos Pinto’s long and distinguished history was further strengthened when the house became part of the Louis Roederer Family in 1990 who share the family history, focus on quality and investment in the future. Today, Adriano and Antonio’s descendants Jorge and Ana Rosas continue their pioneering spirit and search for the highest quality in the Douro as CEO and Master Blender respectively.

Vinha da Urtiga is planted on pre-phylloxera terraces and contains 63 indigenous Douro grape varieties. Production is fully organic, with biodynamic practices implemented in the vineyard. Each vine is monitored with GPS, allowing detailed tracking of phenological development, bunch number, branch weight and resistance to drought, rot and heat. This precision viticulture supports the expression of an old-vine field blend with freshness, complexity and a clear sense of place.
Vinification
After regular vineyard visits, a harvest date is set and a specialist team removes any grapes not in perfect condition. The following morning, harvest begins at Vinha da Urtiga. Grapes arrive in small boxes, are sorted bunch by bunch, destemmed, crushed and transferred to granite lagares. Foot treading begins fermentation, followed by daily cap work before pressing. Alcoholic and malolactic fermentation finish in French oak vats. The wine ages for 16 months in wood, then three years in bottle.
2019
The 2019 vintage was very dry, with high temperatures early in the year bringing forward the start of the growing cycle. Mild temperatures in August and September extended ripening and enabled continuous maturation under ideal water-stress conditions. A first picking on 9 September removed sub-par grapes, with harvest on 10 September. The many grape varieties showed impressive homogeneity and health, combining maturity with preserved acidity.
Tasting Note
The wine is vivid crimson with bright red reflections. The nose opens with ripe, profound aromas of cherry and China ink, then gradually reveals multiple aromatic layers. The palate begins velvety and gains vivacity, showing redcurrant, violet and spice. Full-bodied yet elegant, it combines soft tannins, precise acidity and a refined old-vine field-blend character. The finish is long, fresh and finely structured, preserving the personality of Vinha da Urtiga.
Food Pairing
Pair with game such as partridge or braised boar, oven-baked grouper or sea bass, roast beef, venison, slow-cooked lamb, truffled mushrooms or aged cheeses.
