Sainte-Epine is a single-vineyard Saint-Joseph made from 100% Syrah grown on a south-facing hillside in Saint-Jean-de-Muzols, in the heart of the appellation. Saint-Joseph stretches for around 50 kilometres along the right bank of the Rh?ne, from Chavanay to Guilherand, across Ard?che and Loire communes. The soils consist of light schist and gneiss over granite bedrock, with south and south-east exposures. Produced only in the best years, Sainte-Epine is limited to around 4,000 bottles annually.
Vinification
The Sainte-Epine grapes are hand-harvested at optimum ripeness. Fermentation takes place in traditional open-topped concrete tanks after three days of cool pre-fermentation skin contact. Maceration continues at controlled temperatures of 28-30C, with daily cap pushing down and pumping over for around ten days. Total maceration can last up to 20 days. The wine is aged for 14 to 16 months, half in new barrels and half in one-year-old barrels, with regular topping up.
Tasting Note
Sainte-Epine is deep ruby in colour with purple tinges. The nose shows blackberry and spice, lifted by mineral notes and gentle oak. The palate is concentrated and layered, with pure flavours unfolding in successive aromatic waves of equal intensity. Full-bodied and structured, it combines dark fruit, spice, mineral depth and fine oak integration. The finish is long, precise and persistent, with the structure for further development.
Food Pairing
Pair with game, marinated beef in sauce, grilled meats, green pepper dishes, roast lamb, venison, mushroom gratin or a wide range of cheeses.
