About Podere Casisano

Podere Casisano is a Montalcino estate in Tuscany, Italy, known for Sangiovese Grosso, Brunello di Montalcino and Rosso di Montalcino. Located on a natural terrace at 480 metres above sea level in the south-eastern area of Montalcino, the estate produces still red wines with freshness, structure and classic Brunello character. For UK trade professionals looking for Brunello wine, their wines offers a focused and accessible expression of one of Italy’s most important fine wine regions.

Casisano was founded in 1990 and became part of Tommasi Family Estates in 2015, after the Tommasi family had searched for a Montalcino property capable of supporting a long-term, quality-led project. The acquisition marked an important step for the family, extending its work from Valpolicella into one of Italy’s most prestigious red wine territories.

Heritage

A Montalcino estate under Tommasi stewardship

The Tommasi approach at Casisano is rooted in respect for Montalcino’s identity. Rather than pushing for excessive power or modern styling, the aim is to preserve the classic character of Sangiovese Grosso: freshness, tannic structure, red-fruited detail and the capacity to age. This makes Casisano particularly relevant for buyers seeking Brunello di Montalcino with a clear sense of place and reliable estate management.

Region and Vineyards

A natural terrace in south-east Montalcino

Casisano is located in the south-eastern part of Montalcino, near Sant’Angelo in Colle and facing Monte Amiata. The estate covers 53 hectares in total, including 22 hectares of vineyards and 12 hectares of olive groves. Of the vineyard area, 9 hectares are dedicated to Brunello di Montalcino, 7 hectares to Rosso di Montalcino and the remaining 6 hectares to Sant’Antimo.

The vineyards sit at around 480 metres above sea level, a high position that supports freshness, aromatic definition and slow ripening. The soils include galestro, stones and clay-rich components, helping to give the wines both structure and elegance. The estate is planted entirely to Sangiovese Grosso, allowing Casisano to focus on the grape that defines Brunello and the surrounding Montalcino appellations.

Viticulture and Winemaking

Traditional Sangiovese with measured extraction

Casisano’s vineyard work is centred on expressing Sangiovese Grosso from a high-altitude Montalcino site. The vines are trained using cordon spur, with attention to ripeness, balance and the natural freshness of the estate. The altitude helps preserve acidity, while careful harvest decisions are important in achieving tannic maturity without losing elegance.

In the cellar, vinification follows a traditional approach. Brunello di Montalcino is produced with extended maceration on the skins, followed by maturation in large Slavonian oak casks and bottle ageing before release. This supports a style that is structured and age-worthy but not dominated by oak. Rosso di Montalcino is handled for a fresher, more immediate expression, with a shorter maceration and maturation period that preserves bright fruit and approachability.

Style of Wine

Casisano produces still red wines from Sangiovese Grosso. Rosso di Montalcino offers an accessible introduction to the estate, with red berry fruit, violet notes, spice, fresh acidity and balanced tannins. It is a practical listing for restaurants and independent merchants that want Montalcino character at a more approachable price point.

Brunello di Montalcino shows greater depth, savoury complexity and ageing potential. The wines combine ripe red fruit, spice, structure and freshness, with a style that reflects the estate’s high-altitude position.

Colombaiolo Brunello di Montalcino Riserva, selected from the estate’s oldest vineyard parcels, represents the most serious and age-worthy expression of Casisano.

This estate-led focus is useful because Casisano avoids unnecessary complexity in its message. The range is centred on Sangiovese Grosso and the hierarchy of Montalcino.

Casisano’s wines can help building a focused Montalcino ladder from one estate. Rosso di Montalcino suits by-the-glass or premium Italian red listings, Brunello strengthens fine dining and retail selections, and the Riserva offers a collector-level step-up for customers seeking age-worthy Sangiovese.
