Castiglion del Bosco
Castiglion del Bosco is a historic Brunello di Montalcino estate in Tuscany, Italy, located in the Val d’Orcia near Montalcino and known for Sangiovese Grosso, Rosso di Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino and Brunello di Montalcino Riserva. One of the founding members of the Consorzio del Vino Brunello di Montalcino in 1967, the estate combines significant vineyard scale, organic cultivation and a refined interpretation of Sangiovese. For the UK wine trade, Castiglion del Bosco offers a complete Montalcino range, from accessible Rosso di Montalcino to age-worthy Brunello and single-vineyard fine wine.

Castiglion del Bosco Brunello di Montalcino 2021 comes from the Capanna vineyard, an important expression of the estate’s parcel-by-parcel approach in Montalcino. The vineyard covers 30.5 hectares, with south-east and south-west exposures and an average altitude of 350 metres. Planted in 2003 and 2009, the Sangiovese vines are trained by Guyot at 5,600 to 6,500 plants per hectare, with yields of 50q/ha. Soils vary by slope, from rocky compact soils at the top to marl and clayey schist with large stones lower down.
Vinification
The wine is made from 100% Sangiovese. Maturation took place for 24 months in lightly to medium-toasted French oak barrels of 30 to 50 hectolitres, followed by more than six months of bottle ageing before release. This ageing programme supports the wine?s structure, aromatic complexity and integration while preserving the freshness and elegance of the Capanna vineyard.
2021
The 2021 vintage was characterised by below-average temperatures in spring and summer. Summer drought was balanced by abundant May rainfall, which helped the vines maintain good hydration. Late August brought afternoon thunderstorms over several days, followed by a cool and sunny period that supported final ripening. The grapes were harvested by hand from 30 September. The vintage produced Sangiovese with freshness, aromatic definition and balance, well suited to a refined Brunello di Montalcino style.
Tasting Note
Bright ruby red in colour. The nose is intense and precise, with fresh floral aromas that show both elegance and aromatic purity. The palate has good body and a harmonious texture, supported by soft, well-integrated tannins. Tobacco and black pepper notes add depth and definition, while the wine remains balanced and refined throughout. The finish is long, graceful and persistent, expressing the finesse and complexity of the 2021 vintage.
Food Pairing
Pair with Fiorentina steak, tagliatelle with meat rag?, pici all?aglione, roast lamb, salmon fillet, mushroom dishes, semi-aged Pecorino with acacia honey or Tuscan bean stews.
