Castiglion del Bosco
Castiglion del Bosco is a historic Brunello di Montalcino estate in Tuscany, Italy, located in the Val d’Orcia near Montalcino and known for Sangiovese Grosso, Rosso di Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino and Brunello di Montalcino Riserva. One of the founding members of the Consorzio del Vino Brunello di Montalcino in 1967, the estate combines significant vineyard scale, organic cultivation and a refined interpretation of Sangiovese. For the UK wine trade, Castiglion del Bosco offers a complete Montalcino range, from accessible Rosso di Montalcino to age-worthy Brunello and single-vineyard fine wine.

Gauggiole is Castiglion del Bosco?s first single-vineyard Rosso di Montalcino, first produced in 2015. The wine comes from the Gauggiole parcel, named after the ancient farmhouse in the vineyard. The Sangiovese vineyard covers five hectares, with a north-east exposure at 170 to 200 metres altitude. Planted in 2010, the vines are Guyot-trained at 6,500 plants per hectare, with yields of 50q/ha. Soils are Pliocene-origin FAA blue clays, with silt, clay, sand, limestone and pebbles.
Vinification
Gauggiole was matured for six months in stainless steel tanks, followed by 12 months in lightly to medium-toasted French oak barrels of 30 to 50 hectolitres. The wine then spent a further six months in unglazed cement tanks before resting for four months in bottle. This layered maturation approach supports fruit clarity, tannin harmony and freshness, while adding depth and structure.
2022
The 2023 vintage was shaped by a distinctive weather pattern, with rainfall during spring and much of summer. These conditions encouraged strong vegetative growth and showed the vines? positive response to the season. The harvested grapes retained excellent acidity and moderate alcohol levels, producing balanced, fresh wines with fine aromatic expression. Harvest was carried out manually from 23 September. The vintage supports a Rosso di Montalcino style defined by freshness, precision and gastronomic versatility.
Tasting Note
Bright garnet red in colour. The nose opens with immediate spicy notes, recalling forest floor, supported by elegant balsamic hints. The palate shows good tannin harmony, lively acidity and a broad, moderately deep mouthfeel. Medium-bodied and fresh, it balances savoury complexity with clear Sangiovese fruit and refined structure. The finish is persistent, lifted and marked by evident freshness, giving a precise single-vineyard Rosso di Montalcino profile.
Food Pairing
Pair with beef tartare, octopus salad, tuna tartare, spaghetti carbonara, Tuscan ribollita, pici cacio e pepe, fresh Pecorino with red fruit jam or charcuterie.
