2nd Pez 2019

Producer Information

Created in the 15th century, Château de Pez is the oldest domain in Saint-Estèphe. The Pontac family, who also created Haut-Brion, gave Pez its vineyards. The domain was sold as a property of the state after the French Revolution and was owned by a succession of families before Champagne Louis Roederer purchased it in 1995.

2019 is the first vintage of the second wine, also AOC Saint-Estéphe. 2nd Pez is a selection made after blending the Grand Vin with a proportion of younger vines

Vineyards

Château de Pez estate covers 48 hectares (42 under vine) , with 70 plots surrounding the Château, allowing for a ‘parcellaire’ approach. Soils are composed of gravel, clay and limestone. Planting density is 8000 vines/ha and the vines have an average age of 25 years. Sustainable viticulture with biodynamic practices used on 3ha. HVE certification level 3.

Winemaking

The second wine is a selection made after blending the Grand Vin with a proportion of younger vines. Vinified by plot in wooden and conical stainless steel vats with thermoregulation. Château de Pez remains resolutely faithful to wood. The second wine is aged for 12 months in French oak barriques (30% new, medium toast). Egg white fining.

Vintage Information

With temperatures above seasonal averages, the Winter was mild and unusually dry. Under these conditions, the Bud Break was particularly early, from March 20th. The coolness and rainfall in the Spring slowed down the development of the vine, and adjusted back to its average period of flowering between the end of May and the beginning of June. The unstable Spring weather, caused slight coulure on the Cabernet, around mid-June. The heat and the sun then settled in for the duration. A little rain in mid-July and early August favoured a rapid and homogeneous véraison from the 9th to 14th August.

Slow ripening, with dry, very sunny conditions and cool nights allowed the harvest to start on September 16th in a very healthy vineyard. Weather instability returned at the end of September and lasted until the end of the harvest on October 8th, without impacting on the quality of our grapes.

Tasting Note

The nose exudes red berry fruit (wild strawberry) and spice (clove). The e palate is harmonious, fresh and sappy. A precise finish reveals textured tannins. Notes of tobacco, strawberry and redcurrant.
