Barr-Eden Estate

Exceptional High-Altitude Terroir:
At 465–545 metres, the estate’s cool, high-altitude vineyards and generous rainfall extend the growing season, allowing slow ripening and optimal phenolic maturity.

Ancient Geology & Historic Goldfields:
Ancient Cambrian soils of sandy loam, ironstone and quartz sit above historic goldfields, which inspired the name of Barr-Eden’s flagship wine, Love Over Gold.

Rhône-Inspired Fine Wine:
Former Michel Chapoutier Managing Director Pierre-Henri Morel recognised the estate’s distinctive character and potential for combining Shiraz, Grenache and Mourvèdre to create wines with both intensity with freshness.

About Barr-Eden Estate

Barr-Eden Estate is a boutique fine wine estate on Mengler’s Hill, straddling the Barossa and Eden valleys in South Australia. Its 130 acres rise from 465 to 545 metres above sea level, where altitude, higher rainfall and a later growing season create conditions for slow, even ripening and distinctive Rhône-varietal wines.

Barr Eden Estate Overview

Today the estate is under the custodianship of Pierre-Henri Morel and Michael Twelftree, with Pierre-Henri bringing extensive international experience, including his former role as Managing Director for Michel Chapoutier. The concise portfolio is led by the exceptionally limited Love Over Gold wines, alongside Avenue to Gold and Dreams of Gold, all expressing the character of this remarkable high-altitude site.

Heritage

From Historic Goldfields to a New Fine Wine Estate

The property’s story stretches back to the nineteenth century. The Pöhner family settled in Eden Valley in 1858 and established themselves on the property in the early 1860s, remaining custodians until 1997, when the estate was acquired by Australian wine industry figure Bob McLean. Pierre-Henri Morel became involved with the vineyard in 2014, working with Barossa grower Joel Mattschoss after identifying a parcel of fruit with striking Rhône-like character. Their first separate vinification was meticulously hand-picked and hand-destemmed, establishing the foundations of the modern project.

The venture expanded in 2016 with wines from younger estate vines, and in June 2023 Pierre-Henri Morel and Michael Twelftree became the sole custodians of the property, establishing the Love Over Gold estate. The Barr-Eden name reflects the vineyard’s position between the Barossa and Eden valleys, while Love Over Gold pays tribute to the historic goldfields beneath the vines and to a philosophy that values long-term stewardship of the land above material wealth.

The Estate

High Eden Altitude, Ancient Soils

The vineyards are situated 465 to 545 metres above sea level and sit across both Eden Valley and the Barossa Valley. This makes it a one of the highest altitude sites within one of Australia’s most recognised fine wine regions.

Its elevation is central to its identity. While Barossa is often associated with warmth and richness, Barr-Eden’s height ensures cooler conditions, slower ripening and a more refined aromatic profile. The site’s positioning, diurnal range and winds allow the fruit to retain freshness while developing phenolic maturity,

Vines are grown soils that are 490-555 million years old with shallow skeletal grey sandy loam mixed with ironstone and quartz while the site’s a bedrock is a combination of schist, gneisses, silt and shale. The Love Over Gold wines is sourced from a historic plot which includes vines as old as 89 years old.

Winemaking

Meticulous, Small-Scale Craftsmanship

Barr-Eden’s winemaking is deliberately hands-on and low-intervention, with an emphasis on preserving the individuality of each parcel. For the flagship Love Over Gold Shiraz, fruit is carefully hand-picked and rigorously selected, with fermentation handled gently before only the free-run wine is retained for maturation. Across the range, older French oak, puncheons and concrete are used according to the character of each wine, building texture and structure without overwhelming the purity of the fruit. The result is a collection defined by ripe yet precise fruit, fine tannins, mineral drive and exceptional length.

Styles of Wine

Barr-Eden wines all display a core of ripe fresh fruit which displays great persistence. Love Over Gold Shiraz combines depth, definition and long tannins, while Love Over Gold Grenache offers a lifted, high-altitude expression with freshness and finesse. The Hommage, a Grenache Mouvèdre Shiraz blend, and is a tribute to Bob McLean, the estate’s previous custodian, who planted a small block of bush-vine Mourvèdre near the winery and Grenache on the highest part of the vineyard. Inspired by the tradition of great Châteauneuf-du-Pape. The palate is meaty and spicy.

Avenue to Gold is an incredibly popular wine sitting in the middle of the range demonstrating expressive view of the estate’s Shiraz with vibrant fruit, savoury components and fine tannins. While Dreams of Gold Shiraz provides a more accessible style of Shiraz made with fruit from younger plots aged in in three- and four-year-old French oak puncheons and hogsheads.

A new Australian fine wine opportunity for the UK

Barr-Eden Estate is bringing something new to the UK fine wine trade. The range offers a strong point of difference for premium lists, especially for those who are looking to refresh New World offerings with high-altitude, small-production Rhône-varietal wines that bring the best elements of the  Eden Valley and Barossa Valley.
