Casisano Colombaiolo Brunello di Montalcino Riserva 2015

Producer Information

Casisano was founded in 1990, and bought by the Tommasi family in 2015. They had been searching for an Estate in Montalcino, believing that this is a prime area for top quality wines and would benefit the wider Tommasi portfolio. Casisano is located on a natural terrace at 480 meters a.s.l. overlooking the south-eastern area of Montalcino. 22 hectares are under vine, 9 of which are dedicated to the production of Brunello and 7 to the production of Rosso di Montalcino. The altitude and great diversity of the soils allow the production of very complex and expressive wines, able to combine elegance and structure – really representative of the identity and terroir of the region.

Vineyards

The wine is made from strictly selected grapes from the finest plot of the Colombaiolo vineyard, one of the highest in the Denomination. The Cordon Spurtrained vines have a density of 5,000 plants per hectare, on soil that is rich in galestro (schistous clay) with insertions of sandstone.

Winemaking

Fermentation at a controlled temperature of 28°-30° C in 70 hl wooden vats for 20-25 days, with pumping over daily and long délestages. Maturation for 4 years in 18 and 25 hl Slavonian oak casks, followed by bottle-aging for at least 6 months.

Vintage Information

Winter was characterised by low rainfall and no frosts or snow. Spring was characterized by average rainfall followed by a hot summer with low rainfall. Autumn was characterised by the alternation rainy and sunny days with excellent temperature ranges. The harvested grapes immediately showed a remarkable complexity in aromas and elegance of tannins. Of considerable importance was the natural acidity, above average. A vintage of the highest and rare quality level.

Tasting Note

A deep, intense ruby with tinges of garnet, it offers a fine, complex nose, in which the fruit combines with a sweet spiciness deriving from its long aging. On the palate it is austere, with ripe, velvety tannins producing an excellent balance between great structure and elegance. The finish is fresh and harmonious

Food Pairing

Colombaiolo is a full-bodied yet elegant wine that pairs with rich dishes such as red meats, braised meats and game, particularly when served with mushrooms or truffles. Excellent with very mature cheeses.

94/100 Wine Spectator

Ripe and supple, boasts cherry, raspberry and plum flavors, augmented by juniper, thyme and earth notes. It firms up, staying balanced and long as fruit, savory and mineral elements converge on the finish. Best from 2024 through 2047.

93/100 Decanter

Since taking over the Casisano property in 2015, the Tommasi family has revived the estate’s Riserva from the low yielding Colombaiolo parcel. It opens with pretty lilac, violet and woodland nuances. Full but not heavy, it’s fluid in texture with gracious powdery tannins. It possesses an underlying juiciness with accents of strawberry and orange which linger on the appetising finish. Drinking Window 2023 – 2035.

90/100 Wine Advocate

Packaged in a heavy glass bottle, the Casisano 2015 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Colombaiolo shows leather, spice, dried fruit, baked plum and potting soil. The wine
opens to medium intensity with a relatively short finish. A Riserva should offer more, especially from a vintage like this that started off with rich and concentrated fruit.
