Casisano, Rosso di Montalcino DOC, 2020

Producer Information

Casisano estate was founded in 1990, and was acquired by the Tommasi family in 2015 after years of searching for an estate that responded to their desire to construct an important, top-quality project in the area.

The Tommasis’ philosophy, especially in Montalcino, is that of upholding the prestige of the region, preserving its identity and seeking to express its potential to the full. Casisano Estate is located on a natural terrace at 480 meters a.s.l. overlooking the southern-eastern area of Montalcino. The estate counts 22 hectares under vines, 9 of which are dedicated to the production of Brunello and 7 to the production of Rosso di Montalcino. The altitude and the great diversity of the soils allow the production of very complex and expressive wines, able to combine elegance and structure.

Vineyards

The vineyards of Casisano are located high in the hills, to the south-east of Montalcino on a 53 hectare estate. Situated at 480m above sea level, the soils are a mosaic of galestro, sandstone, marl, and are of volcanic origin. The vineyards benefit from the Mediterranean breezes, and stay well-ventilated and dry with optimal diurnal ranges; all ideal for keeping the grapes healthy.

Winemaking

Traditional maceration on the skins for 12 days. The wine is matured for 8 months in Slavonian oak casks and a further 6 months in bottle before release.

Vintage Information

In Montalcino, winter was largely mild, with little rainfall, while spring brought generous rains, which built up the water reserves. A hot, dry summer promoted outstanding levels of ripeness in all the grape varieties. 2020 has been heralded as a 5 star vintage.

Tasting Note

Deep ruby red. It has a complex bouquet that is reminiscent of violets, plums and red berry fruits, combined with delicate spicy hints. It is dry on the palate, with an attractive balance between its tannins and acidity. The finish is fresh and persistent.

Food Pairing

The freshness and good structure of Casisano Rosso di Montalcino make it very versatile. Excellent with pasta or rice dishes with meat sauces, grilled red meats, Italian cold cuts and cheeses.
