Castello Fonterutoli Chianti Classico Gran Selezione 2013

Producer Information

Fonterutoli is located 5 km south of Castellina in Chianti (Siena), on the hills facing the Val d’Elsa, in the heart of the Chianti Classico. Owned by the Mazzei family since 1435, it still retains its original form, that of a tranquil country village: a cluster of houses, the church of San Miniato and the villa, built at the end of the 1500s where the medieval castle once stood. Today, the estate comprises 117 hectares of vineyard, largely planted with Sangiovese with some Merlot, Colorino, Malvasia Nera and Cabernet Sauvignon vines also planted. The cellar at Fonterutoli, designed by architect, Agnesi Mazzei, is one of the most impressive in the region, and has a minimal impact on the environment.

Glossy, almost yoghurty black fruit. Plush, ripe and juicy on the palate with broad fruit flavours, well managed tannins. Great weight of blackberry fruit, well judged spicy oak and a lovely long savoury finish.” Platinum Medal

An essence of sweet cherry grounds the surrounding flavours of leather, iron, , spice and tobacco in this firm red, which remains vibrand and refined. Bracing acidity and dense, mascular tannins, play out on the long finish. Drink now through 2028. 5,000 cases made”, 95 points, Highly recommended, B.S. Wine Specator

The 2013 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Castello Fonterutoli is an exceptionally balanced and smooth red wine that is the result of a complicated fruit-blending process. Some 36 biotypes of Sangiovese are used in the mix and are harvested from 120 single vineyard parcels with primarily Alberese and Galestro limestone soils. It is made from 92% Sangiovese, and 8% Malvasia Nera and Colorino. The bouquet offers bold cherry and plum with spice and soft tobacco.”, 94 points, Monica Larner, Robert Parker Wine Advocate
