Rapaura Springs (pronounced Ra-para) is a unique oasis in the dry Marlborough landscape with natural underground springs providing a life source for the vines. This pure water enables the vineyards to produce outstanding fruit with minimal intervention. The logo represents springs water flowing from their stony aquifer.
Fruit was sourced from select vineyards in Marlborough, enabling the capture of a broad representation of flavours. The fruit was hand selected in small parcels over a number of days, allowing each parcel to be harvested at optimum levels of ripeness and flavour development.
At the winery, a period of cold soaking extracted the fruit flavours and was followed by natural fermentation using wild yeast to build complexity. Tannin management was achieved by gentle plunging of the cap. The wine was pressed promptly after the end of fermentation, then matured in new and seasoned French oak barriques for nine months.
The 2014 vintage combined a long run of ideal growing conditions with some late season rain, although harvesting was well-advanced by the time the rains arrived. The Marlborough region’s crop was higher than previous years. Grapes showed lovely varietal character and intensity.
Lovely ripe berry and dark cherry fruit notes combined with attractive smoky and spicy elements. Fleshy berry fruits and spicy oak nuances are to the fore on the full, rich palate. Elegant silky tannins balance the generous fruit flavours and meld seamlessly together to a lingering, elegant finish.
