Tommasi ‘Le Fornaci’ Lugana DOC 2018

Producer Information

Founded by Giacomo Tommasi in 1902, Tommasi has grown to be the largest family-owned vineyard estate in the Valpolicella Classica, owning 105 hectares and an additional 15 hectares in the Lugana DOC. Tommasi is located in Pedemonte in the heart of the historic ‘Classico’ region, from which the best quality wines are produced. The estate is owned and managed by the fourth generation of the Tommasi family, with six family members working together in harmony. Pierangelo manages the UK market, while winemaker, Giancarlo prefers to stay close the vineyards and winery.

Vineyards

The Tenuta San Martino estate, located in San Martino della Battaglia, is 15 hectares in total, eight of which are the Le Fornaci vineyard. The area is favoured by the mild climate of nearby Lake Garda. The soil consists of layers of fine sediments such as clay, limestone and resulting in a beautifully balanced wine. The vines are Guyot trained at a density of 6,500 vines per hectare.

Winemaking

A short maceration of max. 24hours first take place and then the grapes are fermented at cool temperatures to preserve their aromatic compounds in stainless steel tanks for seven days. After fermentation, the wine spends a further four months maturing in stainless steel before bottling.

Tasting Note

Pale, bright yellow in colour, this wine has delicious perfumes of tropical fruit and an appetising spicy character. Medium-bodied with attractive minerality, citrus notes and a zingy, crisp finish.

Food Pairing

Serve with antipasti platters, grilled fish or fish pie or even roast chicken.
