Domaines Schlumberger Gewurztraminer Cuvée Anne 2012

Producer Information

Now run by the 6th and 7th generations, Domaines Schlumberger was founded in 1810 by Nicolas Schlumberger, who established vineyards on the renowned slopes above the town of Guebwiller. These vineyard sites have a history of viticulture, having been planted since 207AD. Through successive generations the holding has grown to be one of France’s largest and finest domaines.

Vineyards

Domaines Schlumberger now own 130 hectares of vineyards, 70 of which are Grand Cru. The grapes for the Anne come from the Kessler vineyard, which has pink sandstone soil and faces east, south-east, which protects it from north winds and cold air streams in the valley. Yields are 35 hl/ha. Kessler produces structured and elegant wines.

Winemaking

Cuvée Anne comes from a prime choice of “Sélection de Grains Nobles” wines produced in 2012. Work was monitored right from winter pruning to harvesting. Handpicked on steep slopes, the grapes were the carried in crates (to avoid damaging the berries) to our winery and then slowly pressed. After letting the must settle statically for about 3 days, the perfectly clear juice was put in tuns (where the temperature was rigorously controlled) to ferment. Fermentation lasted between 1 and 3 months until spring. The wines were stabilized, filtered and then bottled. They were then stocked for several years before being labeled and distributed throughout the world.

Vintage Information

The Sélections de Grains Nobles (an appellation since 1984) are wines, made from over-ripe grapes from old vines picked several weeks after harvest. More concentrated than the Vendanges Tardives, they are fine sweet wines, which keep a freshness and natural acidity and a unique flavour. Bearing the name of family members, these wines are exclusively produced in vintage years.

Tasting Note

Straw yellow in colour with expressive perfumes of pineapple, papaya and candied fruit with notes of allspice and orange blossom. The palate is full and ripe with a honied richness, which is balanced by a full and well balanced freshness. Flavours of ripe apricot and quince jelly, candied tangerine and peach puree follow. A noble and concentrated palate, with complexity and character.

Food Pairing

Blue cheeses like Bleu de Termignon or with desserts, white peaches, praline biscuit and green tea sabayon or roasted apricot with lavender, citron sorbet
