Cristal 2013 takes the critics by storm

Last month saw the release of the much lauded 2013 vintage of Cristal.  Upon tasting, speculation was rife about whether it could steal the crown from the ‘Cristal of Cristal’s’, the mighty 2008 vintage.  We will let you make your mind up when you taste it!

Vintage 2013

2013 was characterised by a particularly late growing cycle. A seemingly endless winter was followed by a very cool, late spring. We had to wait until the start of July for flowering to begin – something we hadn’t seen in Champagne for quite some time! Fortunately, summer was glorious with plenty of sunshine, record high temperatures and very low rainfall, ideal for the ripening of the Pinot noirs and Chardonnays. The temperatures were cool for the October harvest and the resulting wines are elegant and fresh – the signs of a «classic» vintage.

Jean-Baptiste Lécaillon’s Tasting Note

“A golden hue with soft, glowing highlights. Fine, steady, gentle bubbles.

Powerful and complex on the palate, revealing a mixture of yellow fruit (mirabelle plum), juicy, ripe fruits (nectarine), citrus peel (candied orange) and finely-roasted nuts (hazelnut). The nose is simultaneously powdery and sweet, with elegant, chalky notes.

Gentle, tactile and full-bodied on the palate. The bubbles create a gentle, vibrating sensation, then the wine becomes soft, dense and juicy. But it is the chalky freshness that quickly sets the tone: the sweetness becomes energetic and intense, giving the wine an elegant yet powerful texture. Fine, textured tannins reveal a poised and vinous dimension to the wine. The finish is savoury and saline.”

Critics reviews:

Jancis Robinson MW (18.5)

“This is clearly made up of many layers and is extremely persistent. A fine mix of intellectual and pleasurable. Pretty gorgeous.”

Matthew Jukes (19.5)

“There is arresting purity and drive here in fact a sip leaves one out of breath, such is the complexity on offer and the time taken for the palate to compute” what is happening”

Essi Avellan MW (96-99)

“Cristal Blanc is so racy and pure with huge, salty mineral tanginess at the fore. But look beyond and get bedazzled by its fruity power. Lemon, lime, white currant and Granny Smith apple with chalky tones and gunpowder whiffs arising over time. Focused and saline on the mouth-wateringly zingy palate.”

William Kelley (96)

“Notes of crisp yellow orchard fruit, white flowers, blanched almonds and warm brioche introduce the 2013 Cristal, a full-bodied, layered and incisive wine that’s taut and chiselled but also notably exuberant in a vintage that I admire immensely but which can sometimes present an austere side. Deep, concentrated and penetrating, it’s complemented by a pinpoint mousse and concludes with a long, saline finish. Less introverted than its 2012 predecessor, readers won’t regret trying a bottle of the 2013 Cristal young—even if I’d recommend forgetting some for a decade too.”

Decanter, Simon Field MW (96)

“A soft gold with glistening highlights, like the river meadow at dawn; the nose effortlessly marries a panoply of flavours, the citric grip nodding to hints of passion fruit and Mirabelle plum, with hazelnut and almond signalling the grace of development. Texturally generous, yet tightly wound, taut and flinty yet ripe and open, the wine faithfully underlines the vigneron’s philosophy, every nuance of its template deftly rehearsed and charmingly enacted”

Pio Cesare 2017s Receive Exceptional Scores!

Pio Boffa was delighted to share with us the exceptional James Suckling scores his 2017s recently received!

2017 was both an extraordinary and exceptional vintage in the Langhe area producing high quality Barolo and Barbaresco of great elegance, concentration, power, structure and ageing potential. High temperatures did push the harvest earlier than usual but even though the vegetative cycle started much earlier than usual, it lasted for almost 185-190 days. In other “hot” vintages, such as 2003, 2007 and 2007, it only lasted no more than 170 days. This extra time and the Pio’s extremely meticulous green harvest made 2017 a year to be remembered for healthy grapes with high concentration of anthocyanins and polyphenols, rounder tannins and intense fruit.

Pio Cesare’s 5th generation: Federica and Cesare

Pio Cesare Barolo Mosconi 2017, 98 points

Subtle aromas of crushed stone and cherry with dried strawberry and white truffle, following through to a full body. Yet it is tight and very tannic with a fine-grained texture and a long, intense finish. A superb combination of structure and finesse. Very typical for Mosconi and the Ginestre area. Exceptional. Try after 2026.

James Suckling | 3.23.2021

Pio Cesare Barolo Ornato 2017, 98 points

Extremely perfumed with dark berries, cherries, strawberries and crushed stones. Full-bodied with chewy, polished tannins that are muscular. Fantastic structure to this young Barolo, as well as great length. It grows on the palate with ease. Truly impressive. Incredible. Try after 2025.

James Suckling | 3.23.2021

Pio Cesare Barbaresco il Bricco 2017, 97 points

Dried strawberries, ash, tar and dried flowers, such as roses, on the nose. Full-bodied and very tannic with powerful tannins and a savory finish. It’s spicy and intense at the end. A very structured red. Imposing tannins. Drink in 2024.

James Suckling | 3.23.2021

Mosconi, Monforte d’Alba

Pio Cesare Barolo 2017, 95 points

Aromas of dried orange, berry and hazelnut with hints of dried flowers. Tar, too. Full-bodied with chewy tannins and a juicy finish. The tannins are very fine and integrated. Chewy and encompassing flow across the palate. Very structured. Try after 2024.

James Suckling | 3.23.2021

Pio Cesare Barbaresco 2017, 95 points

Plenty of blackberry and black cherry on the nose with violet and lavender undertones. Full-bodied with powerful tannins that flow across the palate. Ever enveloping and imposing, yet polished and impressive. Drink after 2024.

Champagne Louis Roederer crowned Most Admired Champagne Brand in the World

Champagne Louis Roederer are delighted and humbled to have been named as The Most Admired Champagne Brand in the World 2021 by Drinks International for the third time in four years. They first received the title in 2018 followed by 2020 and now 2021.

Louis Roederer are the only brand to boast a top three place for the last six consecutive years and as Giles Fallowfield notes “this is the sort of consistent excellence that Most Admired sets out to highlight” and to achieve it “producers have to be constantly striving for improvement”.  He goes on to acknowledge that “in champagne it takes a relatively long time before anything bears fruit, especially if it is in the vineyard”, and it is their concerted movement towards organic and biodynamic farming that has made such an impact at Roederer.  Chef de Cave Jean-Baptiste Lécaillon acknowledges that “consistently better quality fruit and juice is obtained from the biodynamically and organically farmed vines.”

By 2018 Roederer had converted 115ha of their 242ha vineyards to organic certification.  A further 115ha are in their final year of certification and the final 5 ha will be certified the following year.  Fallowfield notes that here “’hand in hand with nature’ is not the empty catch phrase one suspects it is for some large agricultural businesses”.

Richard Billett, MD of Maisons Marques et Domaines, the UK subsidiary of Champagne Louis Roederer commented “For Louis Roederer to be named the Most Admired Champagne Brand in the World again in 2021 is both humbling and gratifying, with peer acknowledgement recognising the maison’s philosophy, careful curation of the brand as well as its pioneering vision.”

The Drinks International Academy of professional wine experts boasts more than 300 members who have a specific interest in and professional knowledge of the champagne market.  They all vote in the definitive survey, which dictates the list of admired champagne brands.  The survey asks them to rate their top 5 brands based on the following criteria:

·       Quality and consistency of the brand, particularly their NV expression

·       The strength of the branding and marketing.

·       The price to quality ration across the range.

·       How much they respect and admire the champagne house.

·       How strong the brand is in relation to its peers within the champagne sector

Louis Roederer presents “Hommage à Camille”, a brand new collection of single-vineyard still wines

Named after one of the most remarkable figures in the history of the Louis Roederer Champagne House, these two wines (Coteaux Champenois appellation), Camille Charmont 2018 red and Camille Volibarts 2018 white, allow fine wine drinkers to discover another facet of the unique winemaking expertise of this family-owned Champagne House, today headed by Frédéric Rouzaud, Camille Olry-Roederer’s great-grandson.

This collection of single-vineyard wines is the result of a long process of observation and experimentation which reveals a different expression of the Champagne terroirs. It is thus in perfect keeping with the approach taken by Camille Olry-Roederer whose bold spirit left its mark on the Champagne House.

Camille took over the reins at Louis Roederer on the death of her husband, Léon Olry-Roederer, in 1932, and remained at the helm until 1975. Thanks to her bright personality, vital energy and exceptional tenacity, this smart lady was able to modernise the Champagne House and successfully steer it through all the important events of that era.

When she invited her most loyal customers to dine with her, this tremendously elegant lady liked to surprise them by serving the still wines from some of Louis Roederer’s finest vineyards of which she was particularly fond.

Frédéric Rouzaud wanted to pay homage to this great-grandmother whom he so admired. Camille is thus a new expression of the spirit of invention, creativity and freedom that has characterised Louis Roederer since its creation and which this remarkable woman embodied so brilliantly.

Behind the creation of Camille, we find the natural, virtuous viticulture that has been practised by the Champagne House for over 20 years, but here we see it taken in a new direction, daring to break with Champagne tradition through the absence of bubbles. It allows Louis Roederer to take what Nature has offered and render it even more beautiful. By working closely with the vines, using solar viticulture and bespoke vinification, Louis Roederer is revealing another facet of the Champagne terroirs.

Whether it is the red (a 100% Pinot Noir from a 43-ares plot in the Charmont lieu-dit in Mareuil-sur-Aÿ) or the white (a 55-ares plot of old historic Chardonnay vines in the Volibarts lieu-dit in Le Mesnil-Sur-Oger), these limited-edition cuvées are an exciting representation of the vitality and finesse of Louis Roederer’s wines, in a single-varietal and single-vineyard wine with an identity of its own

Merry Edwards Sauvignon Blanc Named Master in DB Global Competition!

We are delighted to announce that the Merry Edwards Russian River Valley Sauvignon Blanc 2018 has been selected as a Master in the Drinks Business Global Sauvignon Blanc Masters, scoring an outstanding 95 points!

The Judges of the 2020 competition were Patrick Schmitt MW, David Round MW and Patricia Stefanowicz MW and they gave the wine the following tasting note:

“Lemon yellow. Lovely nose, creamy, layered, with beeswax, pear, toast and vanilla.

Palate too, lovely, touch of elderflower, ripe sweet pear, peach, toast, cream, cinnamon, nuts and long fresh finish, with tangerine and hint of lime. Not harsh, but bright, with oily core, and integrated fine oak. Delicious.”

At home in the Russian River Valley since 1977, Merry Edwards has meticulously explored its hills, pockets, slopes and hollows, discovering small sites which, with the right rootstock, clone and farming techniques, produce exceptional quality grapes. Merry Edwards has been Certified Sustainable since 2017 and all wines are vegan friendly.

The Sauvignon Blanc is fermented in 18% new oak Tonnellerie Cadus barrels. Elevage in barrel also allows for Merry Edwards’ biweekly lees-stirring (for six months) protocol, which is vital for developing this characterful Sauvignon’s rich mouthfeel.

Diamond Creek Joins the MMD Portfolio

Maisons Marques et Domaines are delighted to welcome Napa Valley’s Diamond Creek Vineyards to their portfolio of world class producers following Maison Louis Roederer’s acquisition of this iconic property earlier this year.

Maison Louis Roederer’s passion for exploring California’s best terroirs began in 1982 with their purchase of Roederer Estate in the Anderson Valley, distributed by MMD since 1995, and has become synonymous with outstanding Sparkling Wine from California. In 2019, Louis Roederer extended their Californian portfolio to include Merry Edwards from the Russian River Valley, also distributed by Maisons Marques et Domaines.

According to Frédéric Rouzaud, President & CEO of Maison Louis Roederer, “the acquisition of Diamond Creek is the continuation of our journey into the greatest appellations in the world and our relentless quest to produce great wines with strong identity. Reflective of their pioneering characters, Al and Boots Brounstein built Diamond Creek from the ground up, producing some of the most celebrated and singular wines of the region. I am delighted that, once again, we have the opportunity to carry on the opus of an iconic family and embody its values and savoir-faire”.

Roederer and Diamond Creek have long shared the same philosophy of estate driven production, family ownership and, above all, the pursuit of excellence. In 1997, Al and Boots Brounstein were among a small group of wine luminaries invited to Paris by Jean-Claude Rouzaud, Frédéric’s father, to celebrate the 30 greatest wines in the world on his 30-year anniversary at the helm of Louis Roederer. Their friendly relationship endured until Al’s passing and Jean-Claude’s retirement in 2006 and was continued by Frédéric and Boots who were exploring ways to partner until she passed in July 2019 at age 92.

“Passing the reigns onto Maisons Marques et Domaines, Louis Roederer’s UK subsidiary, is a natural progression for the distribution of Diamond Creek Vineyards in the UK,” said Nicole Carter, Diamond Creek Vineyards President.  “On behalf of Diamond Creek Vineyards, I would like to thank Armit for the many years of brand building for our wines in the UK and creating a loyal following.  Our intention is to work with Armit through their private clients as we move the distribution of the brand within our family of companies.  This is a very exciting next chapter for Diamond Creek in the UK as it is our most important international market.”

Richard Billett, Managing Director at Maisons Marques et Domaines, added, “the arrival of Napa’s Diamond Creek Vineyards is a perfect addition to the MMD portfolio and brings another dimension to our growing Californian offering. We are very much looking forward to being able to introduce these exceptional wines to our customers, building on the strong foundations laid by Armit and continuing to develop the presence of this fabled estate in the UK market”.

Ornellaia Joins the MMD Portfolio

Maisons Marques et Domaines is pleased to announce that it has been appointed by Ornellaia as its distributor for the UK market, effective 1st September 2020.

One of the most iconic Italian wineries, Ornellaia crafts impeccable wines that celebrate the Mediterranean character of Bolgheri. The painstaking attention to detail, sustainable viticultural practices and a strong family ethos perfectly complements the MMD portfolio and further strengthens its Italian offering. Produced in limited quantities to ensure the highest quality, these long-lived wines are among the most sought after from Italy.

Joining the MMD portfolio, Ornellaia will be distributed alongside the Champagne Louis Roederer family of estates and domaines, which includes Domaines Ott*, Chȃteau Pichon Comtesse, Ramos Pinto and MMD’s renowned Italian producers Marchesi Mazzei, Pio Cesare, Tommasi Family Estates and Castiglion del Bosco.

Richard Billett, Managing Director of MMD, commented “We are delighted and tremendously excited to be entering into partnership with Ornellaia, one of the great properties of Italy. We look forward to a close collaboration in our aim to strengthen and continue to develop the distribution, positioning and impressive reputation of this prestigious estate in the UK market”.

Giovanni Geddes da Filicaja, CEO of Ornellaia echoed “Before COVID-19 added itself to the long list of challenges facing the UK trade, Ornellaia had already decided to make changes to its UK distribution strategy. Armit Wines has accompanied Ornellaia for many years and the brand’s notoriety in the UK has certainly grown during their tenure. The decision to entrust MMD UK with the distribution of its wines to UK trade, while the Ornellaia management team develops the B2C channels, demonstrates an evolution in Ornellaia’s vision for the longer-term. We are especially happy to join the MMD portfolio given the close ties we already enjoy with Frédéric Rouzaud, president and CEO, of Louis Roederer Champagne. We look forward to ensuring that Ornellaia becomes available to an ever wider audience of fine wine lovers and seeing its reputation among the UK Trade grow ever further under MMD UK
