The famous South African blend from a five star vintage is here!*
After a powerful 2009, admittedly one of the best vintages South African winemakers have seen, 2015 came along to reward those who waited with even canopy development, good fruit set and fantastic concentration. The earliest harvest in decades was smaller than 2014 but some winemakers described 2015 as a “career highlight”.
Rubicon 2015 is a blend of 61% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23% Merlot, 12% Cabernet Franc and 4% Petit Verdot. 2015 is a proto-type of what we can expect of future Rubicons as a result of massive investment and work in the vineyards and fine tuning in the winery, especially regarding extraction and use of oak.
Along with 2009, 2015 is Chris Williams’s favourite vintage of Rubicon thus far. The 2015 is a powerful wine with densely packed fruit concentration and will slowly unfold. An unequivocally stellar vintage, although quite different to 2009, as it produced a more ethereal Rubicon.
“Mesmerizingly dark black purple colour, this youthful wine is wonderfully crystalline, focused and pure, possessing such pretty aromatics of cherry blossom, rose petals, caramelised cranberries, violets, cherry pie, raspberry infused herbal tea and a subtle creamy vanilla pod extravagance. The palate is ultra suave, opulent yet effortlessly fresh and defined, supremely balanced and concentrated. Such gorgeous depth and seamless elegance, a tantalizing brûléed buttered brown toast complexity, creamy filigree tannins and an incredibly long, spellbinding finish. This is going to be a definite future icon vintage on par with the very best Cru Classe wines produced in Bordeaux but at a fraction of the price. Get in early, get in quick, and go long. This is one of the most profound Rubicons of the modern era. Drink from 2020 to 2045+.”, Wine Safari Score: 97+/100 Greg Sherwood MW
