MMD has become the 45th partner amongst an illustrious list of brands in WSET’s Corporate Patrons programme. The Corporate Patrons programme ensures that WSET receives essential funding to continue to develop its world class courses and qualifications.

As the UK Agent for Domaines Schlumberger, MMD has also linked WSET with Domaines Schlumberger to offer the new Alsace Crus et Terroirs Scholarship for a WSET Level 4 Diploma graduate. A study visit to Alsace as a guest of the Alsace Crus et Terroirs Association and its associate members will be awarded to an outstanding graduate from the UK wine and spirit trade. The scholarship will be awarded for the first time at the Awards and Graduation ceremony in January 2017.

Ian Harris, CEO of WSET, says, “With MMD’s support as a WSET Corporate Patron, both our organisations can benefit from a closer working relationship. The introduction to Domaines Schlumberger for the new Alsace Crus Terroirs Scholarship is a great first step, and a welcome new addition to our roster of awards that aim to celebrate and nurture talent in the industry. MMD joins a growing list of companies that value education across their business, and we very much appreciate their support.”

Richard Billett, Managing Director of MMD, says, “MMD is delighted to become a corporate patron of the WSET. As a business we recognise the increasingly important role of education and training for both the trade and consumer and are therefore very pleased to extend our involvement with the WSET and support the great work and value that it delivers as the leading global wine and spirit educator.”

Zodiac 2010, Year of the Rooster, received 99 James Suckling points

We are delighted to announce that Castiglion del Bosco Zodiac 2010, Rooster, Brunello di Montalcino DOCG received 99 points by James Suckling.

“A beautiful Brunello that shows the unique character of this great vintage. Full body, very silky and refined tannins. Complete and complex flavors of dried fruit and spice. Hints of bark and walnut. Even sweet tobacco that later evolves into orange peel. Elegant, beautiful, powerful and youthful- this wine is gorgeous now but will be great in 2020. Only 688 magnums made.”,

99 points, James Suckling

Zodiac is a Brunello di Montalcino Cru from the finest vineyard in the Capanna area, of no more than one hectare total area, situated at the highest elevation (450 meters) of the Estate with a fantastic exposure that enables an even ripening of the grapes.

The beautifully-rendered rooster was designed by artist Shao Fan (邵帆), who belongs to the pioneers of Chinese artists who  examine the boundaries between visual art and design. His work has become iconic and symbolises China’s modern transformation.

For the ancient Rooster design on the box, Shao Fan was inspired by an old Italian superstition that claims that if you accidentally spill some wine, you should immediately dab a little behind your ears, like perfume, which will bring on good luck.

Extremely limited quantities of the highly collectable Rooster Brunello di Montalcino Riserva 2010 will be available in the UK in December 2016, so please do contact your sales manager, or Effi Tsournava, brand manager, for further information.

Cristal 2009 launched in Shangri-La’s Sky Lounge

On Wednesday 12th October 2016 Champagne Louis Roederer launched Cristal 2009 alongside a specially commissioned piece of art inspired by the new vintage at the Sky Lounge, Shangri-La Hotel, At The Shard, London

To celebrate the new vintage, Roederer CEO Frédéric Rouzaud and Cellar Master Jean-Baptiste Lécaillon joined guests at the Shangri-La London, at their newly launched Sky Lounge bar on the 34th floor. The latest vintage, the brilliant, sun-drenched Cristal 2009, launched, according to Rouzaud, to “help life [the UK] out of depression after Brexit”, was enjoyed in Cristal flutes designed by the sommelier at Les Crayeres in Reims specially for the wine. Fruit-driven and approachable upon release, the vintage demonstrates all the hallmarks of Roederer excellence and finesse as well as the ephemeral complexity of the highly prized Cristal terroir.

For the first time in the history of the House, a vintage has been released out of chronological order, with the 2008 kept in the cellars to benefit from further ageing.

The House celebrated the launch of the new vintage, as well as the timeless spirit of Cristal, with a specially commissioned interactive light sculpture by London-based artist, Aphra Shemza.

The piece, entitled Heart Beats of Cristal, takes inspiration from the bright personality of Cristal; the lively bubbles of pale gold and amber lights, the crystalline purity and sculpted palate. The repetition of spheres and LED lights comes to life when a viewer is present, casting a gentle movement to emulate an exquisite ‘dance in a glass’.

A visual attraction, the sculpture will be unveiled on October 11th in the new Sky Lounge at the Shangri-La Hotel, At The Shard, London. This superlative Champagne bar on Level 34 features a 3m high Wine Wall, offering the largest selection of Louis Roederer Champagnes in the UK, including curated champagne tasting flights and champagnes by the glass.

The artwork will be on display in the Sky Lounge until the end of January 2017.

Domaine Faiveley Autumn Shoot

Maisons Marques et Domaines hosted an “Autumn Shoot” yesterday to celebrate the wines of Domaine Faiveley.

Guests were taken on a morning of tutored clay shooting followed by lunch at The Lodge, provided by Nat.ive restaurant, accompanied by a selection of Domaine Faiveley wines.

Domaine Faiveley was represented by Eve Faiveley, Marketing and Communications Director and seventh generation family member, who expertly guided the guests through the outstanding selection of wines served at lunch alongside seasonal game dishes provided by Nat.ive restaurant. Guests were able to enjoy the Bourgogne Chardonnay 2014, the Domaine Faiveley “La Framboisière” 2014, Puligny Montrachet Premier Cru “La Garenne” 2013, Chambolle-Musigny Premier Cru “Les Beaux Bruns” 2012, and the stunning Corton “Clos des Cortons Faiveley” Grand Cru 2000.

Eve’s skill at explaining and tasting wine did not extend to her shooting ability, however, which led her to become the proud winner of the “Clay Conservation” prize, awarded to the person who hit the least number of clays throughout the day!

The overall winner of the shoot, William Hazlerigg, scored an astonishing 39/40, closely followed by Imogen Taylor, who shot 37/40, making her the highest scoring woman on the day.

Pio Cesare wins the Tre Bicchieri 2017 Award

We are delighted to announce that the Pio Cesare Barolo Ornato 2012 has won the Tre Bicchieri 2017 Award in Gambero Rosso Magazine!

Gambero Rosso, a prestigious Italian food and wine magazine, has been reviewing wine since 1986! Regarded as one of the most influential wine magazines in Italy, Gambero Rosso does not hand out the Tre Bicchieri Award lightly.

The Barolo Ornato 2012 was produced from grapes grown exclusively on the ‘Ornato’ vineyard in Serralunga d’Alba, one of the best vineyards in the Barolo area. In 1985, Pio Cesare decided to select a small quantity of Nebbiolo from three different plots within the vineyard to create a Barolo that reflects the characteristics of Serralunga soil. The soil here is poor and compact, resulting in a wine of great structure and ageing potential. “Ornato” is only produced in outstanding years.

Castillo Ygay Blanco 1986 Awarded 100 Points!

It hasn’t even reached the market yet but it has already made history: Castillo Ygay Blanco Gran Reserva Especial 1986 has been rated 100 Points by Robert Parker. This is the first time such an important accolade has been given to a white wine from Spain.

After being tasted by Luis Gutierrez, the critic responsible for reviewing Spanish wines in Robert Parker’s ‘The Wine Advocate’, he stated that it is “one of the best white wines I’ve ever tasted in my whole life.” With this vintage, the winery resumes its long tradition of making Castillo Ygay White. After spending 252 months in 225 litre American oak barrels and 67 months in concrete tanks, the wine is aged in bottles for more than three years.

Read the full review below:

I have been terribly excited about this wine since I first learned that (part of) it was still in cement waiting to be bottled in September 2013. I consider the rare white Castillo Ygay one of the greatest white wines ever produced in Spain, and the 1986 Castillo Ygay Blanco Gran Reserva Especial is a great addition to the portfolio of the winery-an historic wine that is coming back to life. I did a vertical tasting of many of the old, historic vintages of this wine, and they are included in a separate article in this very same issue. This 1986 had seen the light as a limited early release bottled in 1992 and sold around 1995, and some bottles might still be found in the market. But most of it remained unbottled and was kept at the winery, where it stayed in oak for 21 years, followed by some six years in cement vats until it was bottled. It has 13.5% alcohol, an extremely low pH of 2.98 and 6.75 grams of acidity (tartaric). It has a very subtle nose and it’s a bit shy, a little closed at first. It was only bottled one and a half years ago, and it’s not crazy to say that the wine is showing extremely young. The wine shows more open the day after, when it has developed some nuances of mushrooms and verbena tea. This is mostly Viura with perhaps a pinch of Malvasía Riojana (aka Alarije). The palate is both powerful and elegant, with superb acidity and great length, with volume and sharpness, with a mineral, umami-driven finish. It fills your mouth, tickles your taste buds and makes you salivate. There is nothing negative about the wine; there is no excess oak, nothing blurry, nothing to improve… perhaps the bottle used! I think this is a perfect wine. It seems to be getting younger and younger with time in the glass; it seems to be getting more focused and sharper, and I have no doubt the wine will evolve and last for a very, very, very long time in bottle. I kept the opened bottle for almost one week and the wine didn’t move one inch–no oxidation or any signs of fatigue. Having tasted many other vintages, including the also perfect 1919 (which is still going strong at age 97), I have no doubt we’re talking about a white for the next 50 years. Looking at the older vintages, I might even be underestimating its life span. The potential next release could be the 1998 in no less than ten years’ time.

There is something truly exceptional happening at Marqués de Murrieta: the rare white Castillo de Ygay is making a comeback! And nothing other than the 1986, a fully 30 years after the vintage!
