Castiglion del Bosco Gauggiole Cru Rosso di Montalcino DOC 2015

Producer Information

Purchased by Massimo Ferragamo in 2003, Castiglion del Bosco, after major investment in the vineyards and winery, has been restored to its position as a leading Montalcino estate. The estate, with 62 hectares of vineyards (51 of which are permitted for Brunello production) is located in the Val d’Orcia National Park, a UNESCO site, to the north west of Montalcino, near Buonconvento. Locally trained oenologist, Cecilia Leoneschi, who has been working at the winery since 2003 oversees the vineyards and the cellar.

Vineyards

The grapes are sourced from a selected parcel of the Guaggiole vineyard on the northern side of the estate which lies at altitude of 260-300 metres above sea level. The soil is predominantly clay resulting in a structured Rosso. Vines are spur pruned, cordon trained and planted at a density of 4,500 vines per hectare.

Winemaking

The grapes are hand-picked and whole bunches are pressed. There is static settling of the lees. The wine is fermented in stainless steel at 28° for 15 days. After fermentation, the juice is matured in French barriques, 20% new and 80% second passage, for six months before bottling. After bottling, the wine spends a further six months in bottle before release.

Vintage Information

The 2015 growing season was characterised by impeccable weather conditions. A cool and rainy spring gave the vines the right vegative push and provided an excellent water reserve, the perfect counterpoint to the subsequent summer months which were characterised by high temperatures and low rainfall. September brought the perfect balance of warm and cool temperatures, allowing slow and complete polyphenolic ripening.

The grapes were fully matured 7 days ahead of schedule and were healthy and intact at the point of harvest, with an excellent balance of sugar and acidity. All these features made 2015 a vintage to be remembered!

Tasting Note

Rosso Gauggiole Cru is a young, refreshing Sangiovese, whose name derives from the location of the vineyard, historically titled after the farmstead of the same name, located in the northern part of the estate. It is the cherry-pick of grapes from different parcels  and it is the highest expression of the area’s potential, emphasizing the finesse that we strive to bestow upon our finest wines. Rosso Gauggiole Cru 2015 is this wine’s first vintage.

Food Pairing

Pairing the new Rosso di Montalcino Gauggiole with chargrilled chicken and roasted vegetables perfectly summarizes the balancing act between the meat’s protein and the edginess of the wine.
