Established in 1852, Murrieta is one of the oldest and most respected bodegas in Rioja Alta. Their wines are concentrated and long-lived and some, like “Castillo Ygay”, have become legendary amongst wine-lovers. Marqués de Murrieta has not stood back and stagnated however; their 300 hectare estate produces Dalmau – a blend which represents an avant-garde expression of their terroir.
An old single vineyard called La Plana located at 485 metres altitude within the 300 hectare Ygay estate surrounding the winery in the southern point of Rioja Alta wine area. It is exclusively used for this gran reserva wine only, and only in the most excellent quality vintages.
Grapes are first carefully de-stemmed, squeezed and then fermented in temperature controlled, stainless steel tanks for 11 days, with daily “remontage” and “pigeage” processes which help the wine to develop its own personality. Both these processes ensure maximum colour and aroma, without producing excessive tannins. The ageing process is 30 months in 225 litre American oak barrels, with at least 10 months in new oak, and 36 months in bottle before release.
The Tempranillo was hand harvested on 15th, 16th and 17th October. Mazuelo was hand harvested on 11th October.
Deep garnet colour. Restrained bouquet builds in the glass showing red fruits, leather and spice. On the palate it is full bodied with rounded ripe tannins. The flavour and texture given extra complexity and freshness by the Mazuelo. While it can be enjoyed now it will be a great vintage for long term maturing.
All kinds of red meats, game, ibericos and cured cheeses.
Serve at 18º-19º C. Open one hour before serving.
