Domaines Ott Château Romassan Cœur de Grain Rosé Bandol 2018

Producer Information

Domaines Ott was founded in 1912 by Marcel Ott, an agricultural engineer from Alsace who dreamed of establishing a great wine estate near the Mediterranean. Today, the wineries are owned and managed by Champagne Louis Roederer and produce some of the world’s most prestigious wines, but particularly rosé wines, made at distinctively different estates in Bandol and Côtes de Provence appellations.

Vineyards

The soil is poor, composed of limestone, sandstone, and marine Upper Cretaceous marls. The sea air from the Bay of Bandol compensates for the terroir’s acidity and low rainfall.

Winemaking

The grapes are all hand picked and go through a stringent selective sorting, followed by an extremely delicate pressing process. Fermentation is done in thermo-regulated vats followed by ageing in oak casks for six to eight months

Vintage Information

2018 was a challenging vintage due to frosts, hail, summer storms and lack of wind. The viticultural team at Domaines Ott* had to remain vigilant at all times in order to deal with these complications efficiently and ensure that the growing cycle was able to continue in the right conditions. On tasting the fruit, although there were less sugars than 2017, there was perfect balance. The team was extremely proud of the excellent yields across all of the vineyards. Vinification gave rise to a fruity, ethereal and perfectly balanced vintage.

Tasting Note

Light peach in colour with a delicate nose full of floral notes which evolve towards citrus fruits and vine peaches. On the palate the wine is soft, well structured and refined with flavours of grapefruit and white stone fruits. It is a wine of balance, finesse and tension.

Food Pairing

All Mediterranean cuisine. Roasted vegetables, cured meats, sushi, and gently spiced Asian dishes.

Serving Suggestion

Best served at 10°-12°C.

Wine Review: 94 POINTS

“Orange-flecked pale pink. Predominantly Mourvèdre with Grenache, Cinsault, and Syrah, the Château Romassan offers citrus, flowers and savory herbs on an expansive bouquet. Outstanding depth and complexity on the palate with hints of pear and berries and mounting minerality, culminating in a lingering, dusty mineral finish. Since Mourvèdre based rosés require time to evolve, we also tasted the 2017 Château Romassan, which as expected was more fruit rich and rounder in texture.”

“Brilliant onion skin. Highly perfumed, mineral-accented aromas of fresh red berries and citrus and pit fruits are complemented by a steadily building floral quality. Silky, focused and energetic on the palate, offering concentrated white peach, melon, strawberry and blood orange flavors that show sharp definition and impressive tension. Expands steadily on the extremely long, focused, mineral-driven finish, which leaves a suave floral note behind.”
