Quinta de Ervamoira 2019

Producer Information

Ramos Pinto were the original pioneers of quality winemaking in the Douro, a legacy that lives on today and has been adopted throughout the region.

Quinta de Ervamoira is located in the Douro Superior sub-region in a rocky area on the banks of the river Côa. The weather is hot and dry, adding density and body to the wines. It was the first Quinta in the Douro where, in contrast to tradition, individual vineyard blocks were planted with a single variety, selected for the grape’s most appropriate soil and climate.

Quinta de Ervamoira is only to be produced in the best years and is an excellent representation of the unique terroir.

Vineyards

Quinta de Ervamoira is shaped like an amphitheatre. The hot and dry climate produces ripe and richly fruited wines. It is 223 hectares, 178 of which are under vine. Biodiversity is a key focus, particularly soil health. All viticultural practices are sustainable and no herbicides are used. The vines have an average age of 26 years.

Winemaking

Small, carefully selected plots were chosen and hand-harvested for DOC Douro Quinta de Ervamoira to best convey and represent the unique terroir. It underwent gentle foot treading and fermentation in traditional granite lagares before spending 18 months in French oak (a third in small oak vats, a third in new barrels and a third in one-year-old barrels) followed by a year of bottle ageing.

Vintage Information

2019 was a very dry year and the temperatures recorded in the first months were high, and , therefore the vegetative cycle starter early. Everything pointed to an early harvest, but the mild temperatures during August and September extended the cycle, allowing a longer and gentler maturation period combined with ideal levels of water stress. The grapes from the three plots were harvested in September. At Quinta de Ervamoira the harvest was exceptional. The balance between concentration, freshness and maturation of the tannins was perfect and the quality and diversity of aromas are outstanding.

Tasting Note

Bright garnet with an intensely aromatic nose full of dark plum, morello cherry and wild thyme. The tannins are velvet-smooth and melt in the mouth. Full-bodied with an elegant core of minerality and a long finish.

Food Pairing

An excellent partner for grilled red meats, roast beef or smoky aubergine dishes.
