MMD adds a Puglia Estate to its Italian portfolio

Maisons Marques et Domaines is delighted to announce that the company will be the sole importer and distributor of the Masseria Surani Wines, a Tommasi Family Estate, in the UK market.

“The Tommasi family is a celebrated name in Italian wine with a 4-generation history and a strong vision for the future. We are delighted to be extending our association with the family and strengthening our proposition further with the addition of Masseria Surani”, comments MMD Managing Director, Richard Billett.

Pierangelo Tommasi, owner and export manager, explains the project: “With Masseria Surani we started an important and challenging adventure. We are working hard on this project as we strongly believe in the potential of the Apulia and the Manduria areas in particular to produce excellent fruit”.

Masseria Surani, an 80-hectare estate of organically grown vineyards in Manduria, in the heart of Salento, was purchased by the Tommasi Family in 2013 and the family has an ongoing investment programme including plans to improve and expand the ageing and cellaring capacity at the winery.

Manduria is one of the finest zones for the cultivation of the Primitivo grape, where viticulture has ancient origins, dating back to the Magna Graecia time.

The inspiration of the wine names comes from the Greek Mythology, as the region of Puglia was colonised by the ancient Greeks in 700 BC. Ares, the God of War, is a full-bodied red; Arthemis, the Goddess of the Moon, is a perfumed and crisp Fiano; Heracles, the hero son of Zeus, is the powerful and intense Primitivo and Dionysos, the God of Wine, is a rich and complex Primitivo DOC Riserva .

Masseria Surani Arthemis Fiano 2015 – RRP: £10.99

Masseria Surani Ares Rosso 2014 – RRP: £10.99

Heracles Primitivo Puglia IGT 2014 – RRP: £13.99

Dionysos Primitivo di Manduria DOC Reserva 2011 – RRP: £26.50

Stellenbosch Harvest 2016: Notes from Meerlust Winemaker Chris Williams

Tim James has published a special report written by Meerlust’s Winemaker Chris Williams.

The report appeared on his blog, “Tim James on Grape: Tim James’s South African Wine Pages”, following Tim’s request that Chris describe Meerlust’s experience of the 2016 vintage.

Here is what Chris said:

Well, apart from what has already been said about the Cape in general, I would agree that vintage 2016 has certainly been atypical and, in my career so far, unique.

Our neutron probes and rainfall data have confirmed this is the driest vintage on record, one which followed a very dry winter. This may explain why, even since bud-break, it has been one of the most even vintages. Whole vineyards budded, grew, flowered, went through veraison and are ripening in lock- step unison, which is, in all respects, a positive thing. It has made canopy management, green harvesting and actual harvesting a bit easier. Analysis on vineyard samples, harvested loads and tanks are boringly similar, while all the vines on a given soil type are at exactly the same stage of development. One curious observation is that veraison on Cabernet Franc has been late and slow. Only now are the final berries colouring up and softening.

That said, the dry conditions have brought forward the harvesting dates of Chardonnay, Pinot and Merlot, and while the phenolic element is not so crucial for whites (in that the skins are removed early and play much less of a role in the final character of the wine), for Merlot it may lead to patchy notions of ripeness, it’s still too early to say. The flavours and aromas on Chardonnay are really expressive and beautiful, but it remains to be seen whether the Chardonnay will have the depth of flavour we look for.

For Pinot Noir, we had to pick very early as sunburn and raisining, with resultant loss of freshness were a danger, so I have been purposefully light in my extraction regime, rather seeking freshness and purity at the cost of depth and agebility, I suspect. There is no point trying to make deep, full bodied wines if the phenolics are not up to it, so I have sought to accentuate fruit on the Pinot.

Our younger plantings of Merlot were picked incredibly early. Those with well developed roots seems to have weathered the drought better with slight problems of maturity only on the very young vineyards. That said, I have been cautious with extraction on the Merlot as well, with no post fermentation maceration and shorter, more regular remontage and pigeage on what we have brought in so far. Our better, older, later blocks may be better.

Normally, at Meerlust we use irrigation supplementally, to establish young vines and to give the vineyards a post-harvest irrigation just after picking. This year we have had to irrigate even the mature vines to avoid water stress and vin shut down pre-harvest. This seems to be working, particularly on the later Merlot, the Cab Franc and Cab Sauvignon. The result is that for the first time ever, the little island in the middle of the Meerlust dam is reachable by foot! We have had to stop irrigating now because we have run out of water. This has never happened before. 30mm of soaking rain now would make me re-examine my religious scepticism!

I know of the sad stories from many other areas and growers, but, because of our access to water and the ability to deliver it strategically and  timeously, I see 2016 as an opportunity to make really distinctive, different yet high quality wines, but its demanding much more thought, planning and sampling than a normal Cape vintage. Fortunately, our quantities are normal if not slightly up, we have been able to bring most of the fruit to apparent  maturity but what I’m excited about is that it appears that this year will be different. I foresee the Cabs being the winners this year because of their ability to weather drought and retain acidity. It also seems that the flavours in the Cab are building, growing as time goes by, not being eviscerated by vine stress.

That said, to be brutally honest, I just don’t know exactly how 2016 will turn out. All I’m trying to do now is to get the fruit as close to our definition of ripe as possible, and to give myself the broadest set of blending options later.

The most similar vintage I have experienced is 2000, and possibly 2003; but that said, 2016 seems to be unique.

New Californian Wines to MMD portfolio

16th Feb 2016 – Maisons Marques et Domaines is delighted to announce that the company is now distributing Roederer Estate’s still wines, Domaine Anderson and Carpe Diem, in the UK.

“The arrival of the Domaine Anderson and Carpe Diem wines is a welcome and timely addition to the MMD portfolio”, commented MMD Managing Director Richard Billett. He added “we are confident they will help us build on the success of the well-established Quartet, at a time when the premium Californian segment continues to grow in popularity in the UK market.”

Domaine Anderson is located in the north of California, benefiting from the cooling effect of the Pacific coast, offering the perfect conditions for the cultivation of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay grapes.

The winery and the vineyards, originally belonging to the Dach family, were bought by Champagne Louis Roederer in 2011, with additional vines being planted in carefully selected areas. Today, 50 acres of vineyards located throughout the Anderson Valley in the warmer northern town of Boonville right down to the cooler regions by the Mendocino coast, produce grapes for the Domaine Anderson wines which are made using 100% Estate grown fruit.

The Carpe Diem range is made by Domaine’s Anderson’s winemaker, Jerry Murray, and uses 90% of Estate fruit from the north of the Valley, where the cooling coastal climate provides the ideal location for the Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grapes.

The complete MMD Californian range, including Quartet and Quartet Rose, will be available for tasting at the Go West! Californian tasting on 10th March at the QEII Conference Centre.

Platter’s Review Meerlust Estate

Platter’s Wine Guide is South Africa’s best-selling wine annual. It is an up-to-date and comprehensive guide to South Africa’s wine and winelands, featuring hundreds of producers, negociants, wines and brands.

Platter’s was awarded the Domaines Ott* award for Annual Wine Guides in the 2007 Louis Roederer International Wine Writers’ Awards and continues to produce outstanding wine annuals every year.

Platter’s describes Meerlust Estate:

“The long and continuing history of this fine family estate in Stellenbosch has little parallel in the Cape, certainly in conjunction with a tradition of fine winemaking. The lovely old manor house is lived in now by Hannes Myburgh, descendant of the Johannes Myburgh who bought the property in 1757 and developed the land and the charming complex of buildings. There’s also a valuable continuity (on a shorter scale!) in cellar and vineyard: Chris Williams has made Meerlust wine, in a brilliant blend of elegant classicism and modernism, since 2004 (much longer, if one takes into account his time as assistant), while Roelie Joubert has been chief tender of the vines since 2001. Importantly, as underlined by their Fairtrade accreditation, Hannes Myburgh ensures there’s also a genuine, pervading concern for the whole Meerlust community’s wellbeing.”

Platter’s have awarded Meerlust’s wines with outstanding scores, with the Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlots receiving 4/5 and the Chardonnay, Pinot Noir 2013 and Rubicon 2010 receiving 5/5 stars.

Platter’s called the Rubicon 2010 vintage ‘superlative…complex, dense’.

The Chardonnay is described as a ‘lightly fruited expression with no loss of subtlety, breeding or class. Silk textured, for earlier enjoyment’.

Ramos Pinto LBV 2011 Scores 93 Points

Ramos Pinto’s Late Bottled Vintage 2011 has been awarded a stunning 93 points by Mark Squires writing for eRobertParker.com.

Ramos Pinto was founded in 1880 by brothers Adriano and Antonio and immediately became noted for its quality wines and distinctive art nouveau imagery.

Ramos Pinto is run today by Jorge Rosas, Export Director, and João Nicolau de Almeida, the oenologist famous for officially identifying the five key grape varieties best suited for wine production in the Douro. Furthermore, he introduced and developed vertical vine planting techniques to the region and has advanced Port and wine production by building two of the most modern wineries in the Douro.

The oldest LBV recorded at the Instituto do Douro e Porto belongs to the Casa Ramos Pinto and dates back to 1927.

The Ramos Pinto LBV comes from a single year and a single harvest. Where the Vintage Port is bottled in its second year, the LBV is bottled in the fourth year after harvest, making it a more ready to drink style.

Mark Squires described the Ramos Pinto LBV 2011 as “very serious and very well structured. Its focus and fine finish are lovely … Did I mention that it is pretty delicious, too? In structure, concentration and complexity, it is a mini-me of a fine Vintage Port, with everything in fine proportion and perfect balance.”
