Barr-Eden Estate Joins the MMD UK Portfolio

Maisons Marques et Domaines UK (MMD) is adding Australian producer Barr-Eden Estate to its portfolio, effective 28 September 2026.

The 130-acre property encompasses some of Australia’s highest vineyards, situated between 465 and 545 metres above sea level. Although the region has a continental climate, the estate’s elevation brings higher annual rainfall of approximately 700–900mm. These cooler, elevated conditions create a longer, slower growing season that begins later than in the Barossa Valley, allowing the fruit to achieve optimal phenolic ripeness and produce an exemplary range of wines that reflect the distinctive character of its high-altitude vineyards. Barr-Eden’s name reflects the vineyard’s location on Mengler’s Hill, spanning the Barossa and Eden valleys. The vineyards have also been planted over historic goldfields, hence the wine’s name Love Over Gold.

Originally owned by the Pöhner family from 1858, the property was acquired by Australian wine industry legend Bob McLean in 1997. Pierre-Henri Morel became involved in the estate’s wine production in 2014, working alongside Barossa grape grower Joel Mattschoss. A former Managing Director for Michel Chapoutier, Pierre-Henri brings a wealth of international winemaking experience to the project. The venture expanded in 2016 with the introduction of more approachable wines produced from younger vines on the same estate. In June 2023, Pierre-Henri Morel and his business partner, Michael Twelftree, became the sole custodians of the property, establishing the Love Over Gold estate.
