Duas Quintas Tinto 2016

Producer Information

Founded in 1880 by Adriano Ramos Pinto, this Port House has always had a pioneering spirit – from the distinctive and stylish ‘art nouveau’ advertising from the 1900s to the continuing wide ranging vineyard research with results that have benefited the whole port trade. Champagne Louis Roederer, now the majority shareholder, perpetuates this philosophy and ensures continuity in a company renowned for wine-making excellence.

Vineyards

Duas Quintas of the name refers to the two Ramos Pinto Douro vineyards where the grapes for this wine are grown. The hotter Quinta de Ervamoira produces ripe rich flavoured fruit while the high altitude Quinta dos Bons Ares adds freshness and balance.

Winemaking

The grapes, harvested by hand in 150 kilos boxes, are crushed and the stalks moved for fermentation in lagares and in stainless steel vats, where maceration is prolonged for the time needed to obtain a wine with the desired body and structure. After the malolactic fermentation,20% of the wine is aged in French oak casks, 30% in barrels and the remainder in stainless steel vats for 13 months.

Vintage Information

In 2016, the Upper Douro was influenced by a cold and rainy Spring which delayed the vintage by two weeks when compared with 2015. The vines reached the end of the summer with a good capacity to achieve a balanced maturation. The hot climate felt during the vintage is reflected in the expressive aroma of these 2016 wines.

Tasting Note

Dense, dark red colour with vivid ruby reflections. Aromas of damp earth, spices and a hint of tangerine. The palate is fresh and expressive with soft tannins and a balanced structure. Long and persistent on the finish.

Food Pairing

An excellent choice to serve with Mediterranean dishes such as roasted vegetables, etc. or poultry recipes as well as grilled red meat. Especially recommended wine with ripened sheep cheese.

Serving Suggestion

Serve between 16º and 18º C. Store the bottle upright, in a cool, dry and dark place.
