Established in 1881, Pio Cesare, now run by fifth generation Pio Boffa, was one of the very first producers to believe in the potential and quality of the great wines of Piemonte and to export to the UK. A ceaseless devotion to the individuality of each of the region’s wines informs Pio’s choices in the vineyards and cellar. He applies a ‘minimal intervention’ philosophy to wine making, creating wines that year after year, are ranked among the world’s best wines.
The grapes for the ‘Fides’ come from the family-owned ‘Colombaro’ vineyard near the famous Ornato Estate in Serralunga d’Alba. ‘Fides’ is the Latin for ‘trust’ or ‘faith. A true act of faith and trust was made by the family when, they planted Barbera, instead of Nebbiolo from which a great Barolo could have been produced instead.
The pinnacle of Pio Cesare’s Barbera range, fruit for this single-vineyard Barbera Superiore is sourced from the family-owned Mosconi vineyard in Monforte d’Alba, the first vintage of this designation starting in 2017. “Fides”, or “faith” in Latin, continues to represent the great longtime faith of our family in the Barbera grapes planted and grown in very prestigious areas.
Fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks. There is skin contact maceration for 30 days. Right after the drawing off, the wine rests 20 months in oak botte, while a small amount rests in French oak barrels.
Extremely low yields combined with a strict grape selection result in a very small production.
Full body, balance and concentration. Ripe fruit with a spicy edge. Can be laid down for a very long life in the cellar.
Serve with grilled pork, lamb shanks, mushroom risotto, steak.
Serve at 16-18°C.

“Starting with this vintage, this wine now shows a vineyard designate on the front label. The 2017 Barbera d’Alba Superiore Fides Vigna Mosconi offers a very specific bouquet that is rooted in dark ripe fruit on the one hand (with blackberry, black cherry, cassis and plum) and distinctive mineral notes on the other hand. It offers dark concentration and smooth intensity in terms of texture. I’d serve it with a steak and frites. Some 7,000 bottles were made.”

“This is a fantastic bottle of barbera from the excellent Mosconi vineyard that shows depth and finesse with compact fruit and polished tannins. It’s full-bodied yet tight and reserved. Extremely long and polished. Wonderful finish. Old vines. Drink or hold. 7,000 bottles made.”
